1. Year of Car: 2006
2. Current Mileage: 62,000
3. Euro? U.S.? Canada? U.S.
4. Mileage at failure or discovery: 27,500
5. Actual failure type (solenoid, actuator, VANOS pump drive cog on exhaust cam gear, cam gear bolts, camshaft position sensor , other, or combination): Drive tab on exhaust gear for VANOS oil pump drive.
6. Symptoms of your VANOS issue (idle, roughness, noises, power loss etc…?) Power loss.
7. How did you determine what parts or parts failed? Dealer analysis.
8. Did you have dash warning lights show up? SES light.
9. What fault codes if any showed up? Failure Codes 94 (inlet VANOS adaptation) and 184 (Function inlet VANOS) stored in the DME.
10. Who fixed your VANOS issue? Dealer.
11. Cost to repair (details please): Done under new car warranty.
12. Track use? (none, a little, some, often): No track use by the original owner up to that point.
13. Original owner? I'm the 2nd owner. The VANOS failure happened to the original owner.
14. Changed oil at what interval: 1,200 mile break-in, then every 7,000 miles thereafter.
15. Other comments or history of car: The original owner maintained this car perfectly. He ensured that the 1,200 mile break-in service was performed; which included engine oil/filter, transmission and diff oils. He used only Castrol TWS 10W-60, and changed the engine oil/filter again at 7k, 13k, 20k, and the Inspection I at 25k miles.

Since the VANOS replacement at 27,500 miles, neither the original owner or I have had any issues. I purchased the car at 30,500 miles. The car is now at 62,000 miles. Inspection II was performed at 50k miles. I change the engine oil every 4 to 5k miles, still using Castrol TWS 10W-60. I've tracked the car a number of times, and it has performed flawlessly.

Here is the dealer's report on the VANOS at 27,500 miles:

Drive tab on exhaust VANOS gear for VANOS oil pump drive failed, and the piece went through the VANOS gears and damaged the VANOS gears, and stretched the timing chain.
Failure Codes 94 (inlet VANOS adaptation) and 184 (Function inlet VANOS) stored in the DME.
The VANOS test run failed.
Replaced VANOS unit due to damage to the VANOS oil pump drive.
Replaced the stretched timing chain and damaged VANOS gears on the camshafts (intake and exhaust).
Removed the oil pan to find the broken piece from the exhaust VANOS gear and VANOS oil pump drive.
Reassembled engine and performed VANOS function test. It passed, and cleared fault memory.

Here is Mike's report when the VANOS failure occurred: http://www.m3forum.net/m3forum/showthread.php?t=212573

I'm sorry I don't have time to post this in your format. I've had 7 vanos bolt failures on M3s from 2004 -2006. 4 us cars and 3 from Canada. All came in making noise. 2 of them had one broken bolt and all bolts loose with damage. The average repair cost was 700Cad. included bolts, valver cover gasket, vanos gasket, filter for the vanos and labor. (5 hrs)

Note that 4 customers had quotes from the local dealers for over 5500 stating the vanos had failed.(no mention of possible loose bolts)

Default 2006 6MT Coupe

1. Year of Car: 2006

2. Current Mileage: 42.7k

3. Euro? U.S.? Canada? USA

4. Mileage at failure or discovery: 42.5k

5. Actual failure type (solenoid, actuator, VANOS pump drive cog on exhaust cam gear, cam gear bolts, camshaft position sensor , other, or combination): Inlet camshaft drive sprocket centering sleeve retaining bolts sheered. Inlet camshaft stopped spinning. Numbers 2 and 6 cylinders slammed intake valves and damaged cylinder head which was also damaged by impact with valves. Cylinder head and all valves (24) replaced along with inlet camshaft drive sprocket center sleeve retaining bolts.

6. Symptoms of your VANOS issue (idle, roughness, noises, power loss etc…?) No antecedent symptoms. Car just died (limp mode) with no audible sound at approximately 50 mph and would not restart.

7. How did you determine what parts or parts failed? BMW dealership.

8. Did you have dash warning lights show up? None prior. Or after. It looked like an alternator failure.

9. What fault codes if any showed up? Don’t know.

10. Who fixed your VANOS issue? Local BMW dealer.

11. Cost to repair (details please): Repaired under warranty. Although tech told me cylinder block was around $3000 itself for the part.

12. Track use? (none, a little, some, often) None.

13. Original owner? Purchased 12/06 with 5k miles.

14. Changed oil at what interval: Every 7500 miles.

15. Other comments or history of car: Car ran like a top and never a hint of malfunction in the VANOS.

Seems all dealers claim it's a sealed unit with no serviceable parts. Such bull$hit. They just want to rape people for 5 grand.
