4. Mileage at failure or discovery:

5. Actual failure type (solenoid, actuator, VANOS pump drive cog on exhaust cam gear, cam gear bolts, camshaft position sensor , other, or combination):

8. Did you have dash warning lights show up?
yes and no
9. What fault codes if any showed up?
B8
48

10. Who fixed your VANOS issue?
-no one. Swaped for a used solenoid, that didn;'t do the trick. New vanos will be on in a few month. Was debating dr.vanos, however i think the acturator is not rebuilt, just the solenoid is new. I don't want to waste more time and money on labour. etc. . I just want to do it once and get it done

5. Actual failure type (solenoid, actuator, VANOS pump drive cog on exhaust cam gear, cam gear bolts, camshaft position sensor , other, or combination): No idea. Dealer said it was "bad" and needed replacement.
6. Symptoms of your VANOS issue (idle, roughness, noises, power loss etc…?) SES light, followed by limp mode. Dealer read the codes, cleared them, ran like a top. For 50 miles, then SES, limp mode, diagnosis of "bad"
7. How did you determine what parts or parts failed? Didn't
8. Did you have dash warning lights show up? SES
9. What fault codes if any showed up? Don't know exactly, Inlet something and Exhaust someting.
10. Who fixed your VANOS issue? Dealer
11. Cost to repair (details please): After a long battle with BMW NA & Dealer, covered under rod bearing recall warranty, as many here had done. Interesting that a member here emailed me his invoice, and under cost it showed "Warranty". Mine said Goodwill. Trying to nip it in the bud for further claims?
12. Track use? (none, a little, some, often) Not by me.
13. Original owner? Second owner
14. Changed oil at what interval: Not sure, but acceptable intervals for BMW NA otherwise no way they would have replaced it for free.
15. Other comments or history of car
I bought the car from an indy dealer who said it was bought at an off-lease auction. Pretty sure they were full of it on that count, and pretty sure they knew about the VANOS issue. Should have joined M3F BEFORE buying and had a PPI done. Knock on wood, all has been fine since.

Bumping back up. Hope more of the PM's I sent fill this out. I know this is really early, but 2003.5 and 2004 looks like there was a bad man or robot on the engine building line, or some bad metal outsourced fabrication.
