Any update on BMW taking responsibility for this?

What were there responses? What about from the lawyers who took care of the subframe issue? Is anybody following up? It seems like this is too common of a matter to just let go.

Response from the dealer who contacted the area BMW rep was "yes we've seen this before".
Response from BMW NA, "thank you for informing us of this issue I'll pass it along".

I spoke with my attorney and he told me that unless you can find a lot of people who have had the EXACT same issue then there isn't really much there. The key emphasis is exact, meaning broken vanos gear bolts, and to my knowledge there has only been 3-5 that I'm aware of.

Default DIY mechanics are lucky when they don't bend valves

JRM3, you must have the angels on your side! Had my indy shop with about a 100 years combined BMW experience replace my 12 bolts (even though the originals turned out to still be tight), the exhaust (outlet) cam gear which had sheared off one of the tabs that drives the vanos oil pump, and the vanos with one rebuilt by Dr. Vanos. Even using all the specified tools to lock the cam, etc., and turning the engine by hand before starting it, they bent all 12 exhaust valves at start-up. The whole repair was billed at $7624 of which the shop ate all but $2490 (and that includes a Level I Inspection, replacing the bolts and the cost of the rebuilt vanos). I bought a practically new exhaust cam gear on this forum for $300 and the buyer threw in a vanos which I traded along with the original off the car to Dr. Vanos for core charges. I think the way the shop explained the mistake to me was that apparently they installed the helical gear into the cam gear one tooth off. The shop had heavily researched the repair with other professionals and found lots of ambiguity in the service bulletins and among the mechanics about how to align everything during reassembly. They've definitely got the procedure down pat now if anyone in SE VA wants a referral.

Default Re: Vanos bolt failure, vanos gear, videos & pictures

I agree BMW North America must take responsibility for bad parts. I just ended up doing a complete engine swap on my 2002/M3/SMG/86,xxx miles due to intake cam gear bolt failure that ran me over $10000.00. Unfortunately in my case all 6 bolts broke off and pistons came in contact with valves so I had to go with a swap. From reading up on the issue it looks like a large amount of S54 engines have the same problem. How can BMWNA get way with acknowledging that the bolt are no good and replacing them at the parts department but not doing a recall after so many of their loyal customers are having issues. If anything comes of this please advice I did keep all my receipts and I would love to sign the petition if one comes up. I love my M but I am not sure if i can do this again... it is not a cheap car to work on especialy if you live in Alaska....
