Default Vanos unit???

in case you guys don't remember my service engine light thread.

my cars service engine light came on for a day then went off. brought it to the dealer and they called today and said it was the vanos unit.

now i always get lucky and get a service guy who doesn't know what anything is. he basically told me this helps your fuel economy and adjusts the valves to your driving style

do any of you guys know more about this part that they need to replace in my car?? is it a major job or should be concerned with reliability on my car???

i only have it about 3 weeks it is an 03 with 25k miles

thanks

H-Bomb,

I know you are new and is really exicited about the car. But truth to the matter is there are 800+ pages of threads on this forum. Almost everything you need to know can be found by searching. Again welcome to the fourm, and please do a search.

Now to answer your quwstion, the VANOS unit is a major componat to your engine. Most of the SA at BMW delaers don't know anything about our cars. I would either talk to a master tech or find a different SA.

Good Luck

Not sure if I should show you this but.. if you want to see how major it really is, do a search for "vanos failure, massive vanos failure" , theres a couple threads displaying the carnage if it should go.

If it failed... trust me you'll feel it.

edit: yea, kind of inevitable since people liked her so much.

hmmm so if it didn't fail then it could just need to be replaced???

i did some searches and read through a few of those threads and your right those guys new something was wrong, if my light didn't come on i would of known nothing

hopefully it won't be to major, i am gonna talk to the head tech and see what he says

since i only have the car 2 weeks from the dealer if it is bad you think i have grounds to return the car and get a different one??

I dont know much more then what I just told you about the vanos unit, that was just basic stuff.

On the last thing, you would have to talk to them. If you were thinking of the lemon law, has to be something wrong, and if they can't fix that exact same problem that you have the third time, then its considered a lemon.
