If any of you guys are looking to have this done and live close to Long Island, I recommend going to TKX Performance in Huntington Station.

Yea tell me about it, I had just bought the car 2 weeks prior to this sound developing .

And YES I did have it PPI'd at my local dealer, and I specifically asked MULTIPLE times that they please double and triple check the subframe. Everything came back fine and I bought the car

(they did get me covered under the class action suit however, this was Sept of 2010, $7k fix paid for by BMW NA with a new rear floor in my car I was happy)

Man spending extra thousand dollars I can think about so much stuff to do it on My car. I mean what are the chances of subframe breaking though?

BMW will tell you it's less than 2% of the cars, but 2% is actually a pretty high number with how many e46's were made.

In reality - they all have the same floor, they're all prone to break. Personally, I think if we wait long enough most of them will crack.

This is not an 'if' it will fail, it's a 'when' on an E46 coupe.

Your car's subframe mount points will crack. I would start budgeting for it as 'maintenance' once these cars hit 100k. That's what I did, and it turned out to be well timed.

For the repair job itself, I got quotes from $1300 - $1500. Add new subframe bushings = $200 + another 2 hours labor roughly.
2 additional hours to install bushings in the diff carrier which is already out of the car? Seems extreme. Even without a press or any special tools, just a drill, hammer, various chisel's and prybars I got mine out in under an hour and the new ones installed in 15 minutes. And that was with many breaks to curse and rub my thumb that got slammed by the hammer!

If you're hearing that though, you're subframe is toast. Normal costs to get it fixed? $800-$1200 for reinforcement and small cracks. For bigger cracks you need a whole new floor and you're looking at over $5000 for the repair, mine was $7000.
Exactly how loud is the click and how to create it? Does it click constantly? Thx.
