Default E46 M3 vs M4...driving feel?

At risk of starting some kind of uncontrollable thread war...and I'm posting here instead of the general BMW because I'd value the input of the E46 crowd.

Have any of the E46 M3 drivers here tried out a M4? I'm hoping to keep my M3 for as long as possible since I just flat out love driving it (and it's not terrible to work on), but I do want to have options in the back of my head just in case. I'm not a fan of turbochargers, and would prefer a MT so that does enter into it. Ideally it would be a convertible or (moving beyond BMW) targa and DIY friendly. Some potential contenders:

M4
E92/E93 M3

far less likely:
C8 corvette (blasphemy, I know)
Jaguar F-type of some sort

Almost certainly not, but can't get the thought out of my head:
vintage Gen2 MR2 (had one for years and loved it)

Not sure what you're asking for. E46, e90, f82, targa, c8, jaguar all in the same list?

Im kinda in the same boat and those cars you listed are also on my list (even the C8). But the one that is up there next to the M4 is a Boxster S.

Same boat here man. Add an mk3 RS to the list. I think if you, me and everyone else here can get over themselves about the "fact" that every performace car must be like the e46 m3 you'll find it easy to appreciate how awesome the cars on your list could be. Also kudos at the mr2, that recently got on my radar too for some reason.

No, mostly the m4 and/or e92/93. The others are there just to confuse the issue

Totally agree.

OP when I drove an S55 (although it was in an M2C not in an M4) I was somewhat disappointed. It didn't really seem exciting to me. S65 definitely feels exciting though. I'd say go test drive some cars and see how you like them.

I've driven the F80 M3 pretty extensively. Honestly it's a better car than the E46. Where the E46 has it beat is throttle response and steering feel. F8x is better in literally every other way. Far superior chassis, far superior suspension, brakes that don't suck.

I'm under the impression that the m4 is just a rebadged e92 chassis? Which people say the e46 has a better feel handling/driving wise. But then again people claim the e46 m3 is the best car in the whole world.

No way? A way newer car with newer technology and development R&D would be better. No way?! Lol
