"The S54 engine uses BMW's VANOS variable-valve timing mechanism. There is a filter inside the oil pressure valve that prevents contaminents from lodging in the system. Replacing or cleaning the filter is simple insurance to prevent VANOS failure. And a clean filter allows oil to pass unobstructed, meaning more efficient VANOS operation. This tiny filter slips on the end of the oil pressure valve, located on the side of the VANOS unit. Replacement is a simple procedure."

But you have to ask yourself why is the filter clogging? Is it 15,000 mile oil gunked up with crap? Or is there excessive wear in the motor? If you replace the filter and it's dirty, if you don't find the cause of the build up, you've really accomplished little since this part is not something that is supposed to be on a regular change frequency. It's the paranoia effect.

Hoping others will chime in here. I spent some time combing through this document on BMW's VANOS design and stumbled across this nugget of information for the S54 on page 55. Thoughts?

Great document, very interesting to see how they solved the problem in each engine.
In the Beisan articles Raj says not to take apart the PLV but with that diagram
it looks quite simple to disassemble and re-assemble with the adjuster piston back in the same place.

Based on the valve body diagram, the filter is for filtering the oil to be relieved through the 115 bar relief valve and dumped back to the oil pan. This filtered oil does not flow into other vanos components. So why care? I think this is to prevent a dirty valve that could cause too high pressure if jammed or too low pressure if ajar opened.

There is another oil filter within the feeding valve -- the low pressure on the front of the head that feeds the vanos pump.

I agree, it's not really critical. And the oil is already filtered a number of times before it gets there in the first place.

My interpretation is that the filter does not need to be serviced like the engine oil filter would.

It's a cheap maintenance item. I try to do it every oil change (for me that's once a year). It's not going to break the bank. The few extra dollars is nothing for owners of well taken care of cars IMO.

Exactly. When I rebuilt my Vanos I bought the kit with the new filter and Viton orings. I clean the filter during each oil change, it takes 10 minutes. Keep a spare filter on hand if needed.
