Let me see:

Cost of a e46 m3 with super low miles in LSB
Wide body Kit
Supercharger
Full Brembo BBK
Full exhaust
Suspension
Maintenance

All this while the E46 was still the current chassis/generation....... Yea could have bought a nice Ferrari for sure.

The thing is, yes, you could buy a ferrari. But you couldn't drive it. And even if you drove it, at great expense, you couldn't drive it regularly or track it.

Which is why I have no regrets on putting similar money into my M3.

I love reading these responses. It makes me feel proud to own my M3.

Honestly, I don't want to know how much it's been. The back of the envelope calculation is neighboring "you're a dumbass" territory.
Entirely this - I've owned mine for 9 years and 70k miles. I've gotta be knocking on $20k by this point.

I'd say somewhere around the $10k mark in about the 30k miles I've put on it. About to put another $2-3k in it. haven't crunched the number of everything yet. Hardly any of that was necessary or done efficiently. It's been a long learning process.

I have had mine for almost a year at this point. Paid 9k and I am probably 4k in to it in maintenance. About 80% of that was spent up front on shocks, mounts, guibo, inspection II parts, cooling system, etc. I haven't had to do much besides change oil to it in the last 4 months or so. About to hit 200k woop woop!

After I finish my house remodel (talk about a money pit!! I probably have 25k in materials and that is 100% with me doing the labor including a roof) then it will be time to do the subframe/vanos....

This is very true while the costs are much lower on the e46, you would also be more fearful driving it like you drive the m3.

Overall the m3 is more of a driver's car that can actually be enjoyed more at an average salary level.

I was looking for a stock car but when mine came up for sale 5 years and 30K ago, it had all of my ideal upgrades and ended up saving me a lot in the long run. So beyond the purchased price, in that time I've put in about $15K - proactive on bulletproofing things (subframe, vanos, etc.), obsessive maintenance (two complete inspections with new ancillary parts), and relatively minor mods along the way.

I don't feel so bad now that I just completed investing similar updates and mods to my E46 M3. I've owned it for 15 years and I completed an extensive amount of work last year costing ~$10K...then my wife surprised me on xmas with a 2017 M2. Oops I pulled the trigger on my upgrades a little soon. Now selling the M3 will be tough without losing a lot of my investment. However, the M2 is a blast though...
