I bent the spring and it fixed it, but I had already ordered a new spring. It seems that either way it will work.

how funny this has been bugging me too for the past month. i found out about it when someone told me my gas tank lid was flapping while i was autocrossing. for a temporary fix i used a small piece of 3M double sided tape where the gas tank lid pushrod is located and affixed it to the gas tank lid on the inside.

I fixed mine by pulling the spring out and flipping it around (either back to front or top to bottom, I don't recall which.) Worked great! Took about ten seconds and I did it when I was filling up with gas. I haven't had a problem with the door since. I remember reading about the fix in a different thread.

I had this problem on two E36s I owned. I just sprayed the spring with an aerosol lubricant and that corrected the problem. Might want to givethat a try first before replacing the spring. I believe the area where the spring rests against the body of the car get's dry and prevents the spring from sliding across as the door is closed.

Thanks for the tip. I used WD-40 on the spring where it contacts other pieces and now it closes shut without popping back ajar.

This thread is worth a bump. Funny how a little juice fixes an incredibly annoying issue seen on so many E46s.
