Default Question from a new buyer

Hello all. I've been on and off the forum for a little bit just lurking. But my 1995 Land Cruiser is gonna need some pretty extensive work coming up so I'm checking out M3s again to bounce between the two when one or the other needs work.

My question is, and yes I've searched, is there any significant difference between the 3L and 3.2L cars except for the engine and trans? Should I avoid the S50s?
Im checking out a 95 in Dakar yellow and it seems to have the lux package (funky door inserts and twisted side skirts). Is there anything I need to know about the lux package other than looks? It seems unique in that it is dove grey on the inside, no wood trim and the door pulls are black not chrome.
140K miles and the price seems right.

Thank you all for the help and the informative sticky for new owners. If this community is like the land cruiser community I think I'll like it. I used to own an air cooled porsche but I didn't fit in with that crowd.

Thanks again.
Ch.

That sounds like a Sport package car and not a lux... but given the age who’s to say what is original.

Chrome door pulls are not standard equipment on any E36 M3.

96-99 feel like better built cars than 95’s. I’ve never been a fan of that year. If you have to settle on one, at least get a very late production built example.

I think he means the inner door pulls....weren't they chrom on Lux cars?

Best idea would be to decode the vin (google BMW vin decoder) to see factory options and build date. Dove is very common interior.

Does the car have any service records?

Yes, I thought the inner door pulls on Lux cars were crhome, but I'm just going off of what I've read in threads.
No maintenance history but the car has been owned by an employee of the BMW dealership and most recently by an employee of the BMW factory so while maintenance has been done in the driveway with no records I'm told the people doing to work understand what they're doing.
I never really trust previous owners though. I've redone a lot of work the PO had done.
This is an early production 95. 4/94. It has some decent preventative mods (new radiator and overflow bucked. New suspension and 17" OEM rims). I'm a big fan of the dakar color.

Are parts any harder to come by on the 95 versus later model years?

I decoded the VIN. Thanks for the recommendation. These are the listed options:
S243 Airbag for front passenger
S401 Lift-up-and-slide-back sunroof, electric
S530 Air conditioning
S540 Cruise control
S676 HiFi speaker system
S686 Antenna-Diversity
S694 Provisions for BMW 6 CD changer
S710 M sports steering wheel, multifunction
S818 Battery master switch
S900 Electronic immobilizer
S925 Dispatch protection pack
Thanks

BMW did never do any other handles in chrome so must be the inners.

Doesn’t the US M3 3.0/3.2 use the same gearbox?

Dont buy the first one you see or drive IMHO. There are good ones out there but honestly at this point - most aren't.

This will be the third I've tested. First one just didn't seem right. Second had some interesting codes "that didn't mean anything". I'll let y'all know how this goes.

Was there something "wrong" with the early production 95s? What is BMWs production year (which month to which month)?
Thanks

Also, there is a 1998 in the area that is priced at $6900, meticulous records, but has 200XXX miles. How scary is 200XXX miles for these cars? I know you're probably going to say it depends on the maintenance :-)
It is also a 4 door (saloon?). That has to add weight right? It's been on CL for a bit now. Might be pretty flexible on the price. Are the 4 door models looked down on in the same way SMG seems to be?
Thanks! Sorry I have so many questions.

If anything Sedan’s are much rarer and definitely not looked upon.

Not sure what SMG has got to do with it, that was never offered in the US. You probably meant and auto transmission. These are frowned upon.
