Post E (Project) Designations
The E is an abbreviation for the german word "Entwicklung" translating to "developement" or "project."

E24 M635csi/M6 (inline "big" six):
M88B35 = 3.5L 286 hp non-catalyst - 1984-1989 (euro-spec)
S38B35 = 3.5L 256/260 hp catalyst - 1987-1989 (US, and some euro-spec)

E28 M5 (inline "big" six):
M88B35 = 3.5L 286 hp non-catalyst - 1985-1988 (euro-spec)
S38B35 = 3.5L 256/260 hp catalyst - 1987-1988 (US only)

E30 M3 (inline four):
S14B23 = 2.3L 200/195 hp (220 hp in the euro Evo II) - 1987-1991
S14B25 = 2.5L 238 hp - 1990 (euro-spec Sport Evo)

E34 M5 (inline "big" six):
S38B36 = 3.6L 315/310 hp 1989-1991 (through 1994 in US)
S38B38 = 3.8L 340 hp 1991-1994 (euro-spec)

E36 M3 and '97-'00 Z3 M (inline six):
S50B30US = 3.0L 240 hp - 1995 (US only)
S50B30 = 3.0L 286 hp - 1992-1995 (euro-spec)
S50B32 = 3.2L 321 hp - 1996-1999 (euro-spec "evo")
S52B32 = 3.2L 240 hp - 1996-1999 (US only)

E39 M5 (V8):
S62B50 = 5.0L 400/394 hp - 1999-2003

E46 M3, Z4 M, and '01-'02 Z3 M (inline six):
S54B32 = 3.2L 343/333 hp (325/315 hp in the Z3M, 330 hp in the Z4M, 360 hp in the M3 CSL) - 2001-present

E60 M5, E63/E64 M6 (V10):
S85B50 = 5.0L 507hp - 2005-present

E90/E92/E93 M3 (V8):
