Might be interested in these. What's the story with the OBDI HFM? How is this tuned and how does it work with an OBDII car?

yup... but both can be done rather economically for what it is. its not cheap to get 300+hp out of a s52 especially if anything is wrong with the motor to start with.

im in the same boat. although my s52 only possibly needs a headgasket. im more thinking its a stuck thermostat or plugged coolant line somehow, cars been sitting for 4 years and recently seems to want to heat up, i havnet let it as all ive done is move the car around. its been driven i think 12 miles in 4 years so...... did a compression test all 6 cyl all where the same, didnt loose any pressure when left sitting for a few min. soo if your looking for a s52 i have one known good 186k miles. dosnt need anything you shoudnt do anyway on a used 25 year old engine.

im doing a ls2 or s54 . an s54 swap can be done cheap. especialy if you keep the 5 speed in your car now and dont open the motor. i dont agree with the need for the 6 speed, the motor makes basically the same power as a s52 until high rpm, dont know how the exhaust will sound though... ive herd some weird sounding claped out e46 m3's. s54 might seem like a good buy at around $4K for the motor till you realize it needs a teardown..... then all of a sudden $8k for a brand new ls motor from gm with a warranty an 450hp starts to sound much more appealing.

the ls swap makes alot of power in low rpm. might break a 188mm diff and halfshafts. and a t56 does not feel like a bmw gearbox. but you can get a brand new engine a gearbox with a warrenty in a 25 year old german car. . sikky motorsports in md quotes under $20k for a turn key swap. if you diy that number plummets especially on your motor sourcing. nowhere else can you get this kind of new car reliability with 400-500hp for the money. even without the added hp the price isnt that bad when compared to a rebuilt s52/zf320 and a new ecu an wiring harness. + core costs.
