[QUOTE=JamesSJ1;1067783323]Stock E60 M5 is actually pretty quiet from the outside. Mine was the final donor car for K&N when they make their intake. Here is a video from inside the car driving with those intakes:

THanks, much deeper tone inside than I expected, but nice.

Thanks everyone,
I'll pass up on seeing the very low mileage never winter driven car I linked earlier as it's too far to go for a first time drive of one of these. If one shows up in the local area I'll have a look, but what are the odds that a never winter driven, manual, low mileage car shows up locally, like the one I've linked above? I wish it was closer, i'd have a look.

Agree.

Don't forget it's 4,000lbs. It's a 12 second car that feels like a 14 second car.

I've driven a 6MT with Evolve headers/tune and Supersprint exhaust that was simply underwhelming. The car was in top condition too.

Oh, don't forget the single digit fuel economy + 18 gallon tank. I realize we don't buy ///M cars for economy but the V10 cars can really catch you off guard.

Even they drive damn near identically, somehow I always find the M5 impressive and the M6 to be a huge let down.

I say go drive it. It probably won't thrill you, but maybe it will. When I was looking at the V10 M5, I already had a blown V8 AMG SClass, and my E46M. This car was right in the middle -- not enough power to make it S55 worthy as an athletic, reliable continent crusher; yet not enough fun to make it E46M worthy as a play thing. So I walked from it and haven't looked back, even though I loved the sleeper appeal of a naturally aspirated high revving V10. Car was a bit lost to me.

But maybe you'll feel differently. Answering that question is worth the drive to see it, IMO.

Cheers,

maw

So exactly what is so terrible about those cars reliability wise?

If you were to get a 6MT (or convert an SMG) and do the rod bearings wouldn't you be mostly good to go?

^I like this a lot

I think the correct solution is E46 M3 with S85 swap.

Modified V10 BMW M6 with Meisterschaft Exhaust (6-Speed Manual) - YouTube

^I like this a lot
Rod bearings that fail by lottery, not time/use.
Main bearings that fail by lottery, not time/use.
Vanos failure without lockdowns
idrive failure
Smg failure
Fiber optic issues throughout the chassis.
Sunroof leaks

And many routine services are less work if you remove the engine :P

I have had the pleasure and luck of having access to 2 different M5 SMG and 1 M6 Manual over a 5 year period in the household around 2006-2010 timeframe. They are amazing cars, fast, make a great noise. The SMG in those years are excellent. Actually liked the SMG over the manual in the V10. Roommates company would lease them and swap every couple years on lease end.

Both M5 went into limp mode a couple times for what the dealer called computer issues.

The manual M6 was was fun, but not in the same way the E46 M3 is. Cant describe it, just did not have the same feel as the E46 M3.

Seemed like when you get too many computer systems controlling the steering, suspension and what not, it does feel good and make you a better driver, but gets kind of that Playstation feel. Like its too perfect.

Dont get me wrong, I love fuel injection and ABS, but there is a feel to analog parts of the vehicle that does not translate as well to digital input and false force feedback. At least for my tastes.

Also, the biggest deterrent for a V10 M car is the dismal gas milage. You are lucky if you get 8MPG, 6 was usual, and 4 if you could not keep your foot out of it.

Just my two cents.
