It depends when the bearings where replaced. The new rod bearings from BMW where not a permanent fix. They wore out prematurely just like the original ones. I believe there been cases of replaced bearings wearing out as early as 50k miles.

Don't pass it up for that little crack dude! They all crack eventually. What this gives you is leverage.

Is the car in super nice condition as it appears in the pics? Does it feel good on the road? If yes to both snag that puppy.

Tells us more about the rattle.

These are my same thoughts. If you can get it at a good price, such as 11k like Eric said earlier, jump. You were going to need to do the subframe anyway (VinceBar is perfect).

Leverage my friend, leverage. Best of luck

I've always had the train of thought that I'd rather buy a car that needs some tlc... do the work, do it right and know it's done to my standard.

Rather than buy a car "that doesn't need anything".

Having those little problems gives you more leverage on the price. you can get it for cheaper and then get the work done according to your standard later

Absolutely! However, This assumes the seller doesn't just turn around and sell it to someone else that is less informed about what issues to look for. When I was hunting for cars I tried to leverage an issue like this, and the owner told me to 'walk' and that he could sell it at the price he was asking, to someone else less informed. ...So I walked (thankfully). He ended up selling it to someone else that weekend, too.

Yep, good insight ^^. Point is, don't let a clean car slip away over small stuff assuming the asking price is fair.

It also depends on what people initially value the car at too. The seller may wait until they find a buyer that thinks it's a great deal despite the small crack, it's the perfectly optioned car, or right color combo for them.

I agree!

@ OP, I said it before and I'll say it again.......with an an e46 M3 the motto seems to be, "you can pay it up front or you can pay it later"
In other words, you can buy that car for a decent deal and give it the TLC it needs, or you can spend more and get a sorted one, but in the end you are going to dump over $20k in to it.
