Default Life Changes - Military

So after my apprenticeship as a Landscape Arch. directly out of HS, I have worked the construction industry for about 5 years. I'm tired of the mentality of the trade and industry as a whole. The bitchy owners, the GC's constantly trying to put some local small business underground for a few bucks and the relentless municipalities surrounding this area. I am now looking to enlist, something i have always wanted to do. I figure i might as well as im only getting older (currently 22) I am set to take my ASVAB tomorrow afternoon with the Navy. Question for the guys who have served, what did you find enjoyable? What do you regret? Do you wish you had signed for a different position? If so, what would it have been?

The lease on my place will be up in about 4 months...which is also the round about time it will take from signing my life away to actually going to basic according to my recruiter. I'm trying to time this perfectly to have a seamless transition. Also, if you believe that another branch has better benefits/pay, please do explain. I am still unsure of the position i will be looking at due to the fact i have yet to test/discuss with my recruiter. Any help/advice going into this would be greatly appreciated.

Why not ROTC+college? The pay would be much better plus you get all the good times of college and you're plenty young and smart enough to take that route imo.

Former USAF. If I could have done it over, I would've been commissioned. Going enlisted is a waste of time. And getting out as an officer, offers more opportunities.

Navy? Really? LOL!

Hey man, I just got out back in July (Marines). I went enlisted despite having 2 semesters of college, and was older than the average bear in boot camp. Although, met a few guys who were 24-29, I was 20. I found it fairly enjoyable. The only thing I can look back on and truly say I disliked would be poor leadership, whether it be pushover officers or staff NCOs who suffered from some kind of little man syndrome, or just stayed in because they had no idea how to handle " the real world". Otherwise it was a great experience, I will say though - ship life sucks! Haha. Not sure about the navy but in the Marines you will play your fair share of "games" as a boot, but being more mature than other junior enlisted will go a long way. I was intel, and I loved my job (still do - going to college to pursue it further) and in my mind the greatest advice to give people considering would be 1) make sure it's what you want, choose the right Branch for you, and 2) choose the right job for you. Seriously. Spend hours researching , talk to people in that field if you can (not a recruiter!) before I enlisted I knew what I wanted and I made sure I got it. Waited 11 months to ship out. I would have waited longer. Don't settle for less. They offered me bonuses, earlier ship dates, etc... Just say no.

Also, I second the ROTC-officer route. Just don't be a prick when you get to your first unit.

It depends why your joining.

-If its for a steady income/ benefits enlisting in any branch is a good choice.
-If your looking for a career with less bullshit that what you previously had good luck, but I'd look into Air Force.
-If you joining to be all you can be go Army and try for Rangers.
-And if you positively want to be treated like shit for your entire military career go Marines.

P.S. good luck on ASVAB, its not hard.
