Yeah, I think the cut-off date was sometime in 2002. Of course if the car has had any sort of a front end collision in the past, the lights probably would have been replaced with the newer un-bakeable versions, which are impossible to open without destroying the lens. My car was in an accident similar to yours several years ago (headlights & hood took the impact) and I got stuck with the newer lights. Had to replace the adjusters in them and what a pain in the ass...

Beisan does an outstanding job with the DIYs, but at first glance its like an information avalanche and it can definitely be overwhelming. Like Obioban & terra said, if you follow the instructions, it's nothing too terribly difficult to do. Just be sure it's something you need to do before you dive in.

Default e39 M5 or e90 M3 WWM3FD?

^ perhaps I'll try, but definitely feels like something to undertake once we have a third car... Currently on the prowl for a nice street/track E36 M3 - have gone back and forth between that and 46, but can't shake the allure of a $12k or so car that is so cheap to run and delivers 90%+ of the 46 thrills

Arguably, the F355 is the only really good looking one of that lineup(360, 430, 458, and so on).

It's not the tissue box an E36 is, but you can still see significant deformation of the passenger cell/A-pillars/roof.
Been thinking some more about the safety aspect of both cars. After looking at the Euro NCAP ratings, I think safety has swayed my decision over to the e90. It appears to have performed significantly better than the e39 in their tests. With the amount of time/miles I'm going to be spending in the car personally (as well as hauling kids) I think it has to be a big factor. I haven't had time to drive an e39 and may not even do so, just to avoid any remorse/second thoughts. Now I need to take the time to go drive an e90 with DCT in order to compare to the manuals I've driven.

Making me feel bad about driving my kids around in the e30.

A fun ride in the e30 here or there is different than it being your only car at the moment, but I would feel pretty bad driving them around in a car that old on a regular basis. That's just my opinion on cars of that era though. I realize that everyone has their own personal levels of what is acceptable. Not judging you here.

Agreed. I would never take a trip with them in the car.
