Earlier ones are much easier to retrofit modern xenon projectors to however...

I believe only 2003s came from the factory with PITA headlight housings.

The second milestone is the beginning of the 2002 model year production (don't recall the month off the top of my head - 9/01 maybe?). This is when they added the heavier spring plates that are included with the Beisan kit.

I happen to own a 12/00-build 2001 model and have no problems with VANOS noise or rattle, despite the fact that I have the earlier spring plates. My opinion is that the accumulator (which can be easily retrofitted to earlier 2001 models, BTW) is the bigger and more important of the two upgrades.

Keep in mind that 01-03 are post LCI cars and will include the 16:9 Nav, sport steering wheel, Celis taillights, and angel eye headlights. For this reason, the 01-03 models typically hold their value better.

Yeah. It really is just follow the instructions step by step, undo bolt undo bolt redo bolt redo bolt.

So long as you don't try to shortcut or know better than the instructions, it's pretty easy work. Nothing high torque, nothing seized, no awkward angles, no excuse for not having every part or tool needed (as they'll all listed at the beginning of the instructions).

The only thing that makes it tricky is that the cost of failure is high. But even that you can negate by giving the engine a couple spins by hand and making sure the timing pins still drop in.

Yeah, I think the cut-off date was sometime in 2002. Of course if the car has had any sort of a front end collision in the past, the lights probably would have been replaced with the newer un-bakeable versions, which are impossible to open without destroying the lens. My car was in an accident similar to yours several years ago (headlights & hood took the impact) and I got stuck with the newer lights. Had to replace the adjusters in them and what a pain in the ass...

Beisan does an outstanding job with the DIYs, but at first glance its like an information avalanche and it can definitely be overwhelming. Like Obioban & terra said, if you follow the instructions, it's nothing too terribly difficult to do. Just be sure it's something you need to do before you dive in.
