The lobe will naturally be worn shiny and smooth. This is not abnormal. If the non lobe portion of the cam is shiny then the valves have been let go too far out of spec. The best I understand it is both the cam lobes and the followers come with this treatment and they are meant to wear in together at the same time.

I suppose I'm looking for a cam/follower set now. :/
Possibly... hard to say without removing. Even without flat spots there will be on optimum angle of attack with which to use the feelers.

Bringing this one back from the dead... I have the same noise and have adjusted the valves twice. I have checked all my followers but mainly concentrated on the pivot point on the shaft looking for sloppiness... I didn't spend a lot of time inspecting the foot of the follower. I did however look the cams over fairly well and didn't notice any abnormal wear... I am suspecting cam followers but would like to know if the OP has gotten to the bottom of this because this video is the EXACT noise my car makes.

Thanks,
Jonathan

A loose sparkplug causes a similar noise.

I'd assume same mileage/operating conditions for all of the followers; why change one to have the others fail shortly thereafter when the labor delta between changing one and all is insignificant?

Sounds like false economy to me, professionally speaking...

Interested in a definite answer to this if anyone has pin pointed it. I have 67k miles on the clock, but I do not have that issue, however, some people say it's common so I'd like to be prepared if I ever hear this. Thanks.

Another one here with same noise. Even after a proper\thorough valve adjustment. Its normal.

After I replaced my followers my specific ticking noise disappeared (as would be expected.)

Engine is quiet with a subtle, even, regular, mechanical top end noise (not unlike my Ducati)

If you can isolate the ticking to one specific area of the valve cover, I'd say that isn't normal top end noise.

If valve adjustment doesn't correct it, it may well be a flattened cam follower.

Can you tell if it's coming more from the front or the back of the engine? Can you put the front of the car up on jack stands and listen from underneath?

It's definitely not normal for the car to sound that say and it sounds too low pitched to be out of spec valves.

Same here. I had a nasty tick that adjusting the valves couldn't fix. I swapped cams for Schrick and replaced my followers at the same time. The ticking noise is gone.
