Iíll take it to a qualified shop for PPI, which would give me a fairly accurate reading of the condition.

Color combo, mileage, factory specs, and condition of the car is what I look for. If you get the car back to stock, $14k is a good deal for you. Then sell the aftermarket parts.

Iím more comfortable buying an otherwise clean car that needs bearing, VANOS, and subframe and taking care of that stuff myself. Plus itís under $2.5k for all that if you diy everything but the welding, so thatís about as much as Iíd willing to pay extra assuming there is documentation of the work from a dealer or a reputable indy. I also stay away from cars that have had extensive mods.

Those M3s are going for $11-$14k. I paid 11.5 for mine and it had 165k, subframe done, ARC 8s, and brand new clutch.

The over 15k M3s I see advertised are generally under 100k miles, extremely clean, no mods, and in a highly desirable color like LSB.

Of course these are personal preferences. There are people out there who canít even change their own oil who may place a lot of value in that stuff.

I hear you on the stuff like bearings and vanos and racp, but how much does that help?

My reasoning isn't useful as I wouldn't buy a pre03.5, smg, sunroof, tracked car. I'd rather buy an 04 6mt with even more miles if I only had $14k to spend. Everybody has different logic.

A friend got an 06 zcp with 90k, smg, for $16k iirc. In socal, no less. Prices are (low)fair as long as we're not talking about an lsb or interlagos zcp or low mileage, etc.

Everybody thinks their car is worth a lot. I've got an 04 slicktop 6mt optionless silvergrey with a maintenance log longer than the great wall of china, but I can't ignore the simple fact it has 177k. Trust me, I know dem feels. That's life.
ZCP for 16k? In SoCal? Thatís a great deal then

That's spot on IMO.

i'd say keep it until it dies, you have more money into it than it's worth.

Also confusing- you list it as an SMG, but add 6 spd conversion?

As someone who will eventually move on from my E46 M3, I totally feel you. I think a lot of car owners need to stop looking at their cars as investments. I spent a lot of capital on maintenance and restoration on my ZCP, but I know the only gains I'll get back is the happiness from driving and less about the monetary value.

I bought my car for $15K (stock @ 136K) and I'll probably sell it for not much more than that when the time comes.

136k is nowhere near "low" mileage. My car has 90k.... that's not even close to low. Plus it's an '03 (not that that matters at all to me but the average person is pretty hung up on this).

Low mileage is sub 50k.... that's where the value starts to really rachet upwards. That and original 6MT. I think maintenance helps a little only in that the car appeals to the more educated folk (wider audience) but not really in terms of price.

I personally would not want a modified/tracked car. I want an all original creampuff that was driven to the office and back. I'd take a bone stock never tracked so-so maintained '01 over a tracked/heavily modded fully maintained '06 all day err day BUT that's me. I'm not normal

+1 on all of this.

Putting back to stock is the only way to go about this imo. Youll be taking a huge hit if you dont.

Vanos/racp/bearing. I dont think youre getting your $ back here.

Or you could buy a 8k 6spd coupe w 190k and dump 20k of fun stuff into it logic

Edit: if you got 993 c2s $ then why even sell the m3 at that point. Also would you plan to track this car?
I think more info on the 993 would be beneficial to this thread. Dont sell your m3 short either. Its a fantastic car!

Could anyone point me to what changes were made pre and post LCI? What production date did the change over happen?

It's worth whatever someone will pay, with that said, IMO to recoup the most of your investment into the car would be to wait for the right buyer. Vanos, bearings, and subframe could add value to the right buyer and it would help if you have receipts for proof. Plenty of variables come into play when trying to sell this type of car.
The average person probably looks at these cars and the top things that come to mind are: mass produced (which it is), year, mileage, clean title, color, etc.

The change over happened middle of 2003, so around July 2003, someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Some changes were updated LED tail lights and longer trunk handle from mid 2003 to 2006. 2003.5 - 2006

In 2005 - 2006 came the ZCP Competition Package
