Default door stop pin issue

hey guys... replaced my door stops today ( with genuine parts) i decided top replace the pins as well

drivers side , had no issues getting it all back together... but the passenger side was different story

while driving the the pin in a noticed the tap the pin goes through, that surrounds the door stop bracket started to separate. needless to say it was a pain in the ass to back out but i did.

any idea of what is going on here.. do i have a bigger problem on my hands? I have decided to step away from this today to try to figure out if I did something wrong or if there is a larger underlying issue with the sheet metal here

any thoughts or suggestions greatly appreciated. I have attached pics of the drivers side which is fine... and then a couple of the passenger side which is not

thanks!

If I've understood you corrcetly...

- Have you tried and pre-compress the bottom of the pin so you don't have to use so much force?

- What about holding the bracket "closed" with vice grips or similar whilst you drive the pin in?

Yeah, i'll do that... I don't know what the issue was with this new pin be clearly it wasn't going in straight... not sure how that is possible but clearly I had an issue.

I'll take some large pliers and squeeze back together those tabs ( I hope I didn't cause structural damage to it) and will probably end up doing some vice grips or be certain the pin is aligned correctly before I start hammering again. Just don't get why the drivers side was so easy to do yet i am having issues on the passenger side

Kind of a silly design.... I like e46 much better with the E-Torx rather than fiddling with this stupid pin

thanks for chiming in....
