Default SMG Schwaben Codes - 20 Gearbox Input Speed & 22 Transmission Temperature

Hey guys - I have a few questions about a recent SMG light issue.

Background:

166k
04 SMG
2 years of ownership ( I have seen the SMG light twice - both times the light came on and went away after restarting the car - over a year ago ).

Transmission does a really weird grind while I'm in 1st gear at a light. It will randomly grind while I'm waiting for the light to turn green. Sometimes, it grinds when going from N to 1st or 2nd back into 1st. This has been somewhat of an intermittent issue and I purchased a 6MT to plan for the worst.

Also, the shifts have been slightly slower than a crisp / tuned SMG car ( I have another SMG M3 that shifts much faster and smoother ).

Day after Christmas: Issue / SMG light!

Started my car in 50 degree temps and the light instantly came on. I tried to restart it, but the light stayed on. I drove it to work and noticed the upshifts were extremely fast and something was going on. Made the 15 mile round trip and pulled the codes when I got home.

20. Gearbox input speed
22. SMG: Tranmission Temperature

I noticed that the car will not let me shift from 2nd to 3rd or 3rd to 4th under 1600 RPMS, which seems odd ( maybe I've never noticed this before ).

Thoughts on where I should start? I started researching the forums and came across this link with error codes. Code 32 on this link seems to correlate to Code 20.

Before I order the crankshaft speed sensor, do you guys think this is what I need?

https://www.ecstuning.com/b-genuine-...r/13627548994/

With the car at idle, it does shift from 1st to N to R or 1st to 2nd, etc ( should rule out the Gear Position Sensor? ). In addition, the schwaben tool allows for SMG clutch curve to be reset or other adaptations to be reset, if need be.

Thanks so much in advance!

Any assistance is appreciated!

I'm hoping this is a rather simple fix while I start putting together my SMG to 6MT list.

I'm guessing springs: http://www.m3forum.net/m3forum/showthread.php?t=332766

I still think I'd start with a gearbox input speed sensor.

Hi George - Thank you again for the continued assistance.

You are referring to this, correct?

Part #: 13627548994- May consider this "OEM" part below since the original is out of stock. Thoughts?

Yep, that's the one. I'd find it hard to believe that the BMW OE part is not available, but I have no way to verify being the weekend. But I have run "OEM" branded sensors before with good success.

I have a sensor in a spare transmission, but I've never run it so I can't verify it's good. If you can wait a week I'll stick it in a SMG car I have here and verify it's good, then I can send it to you to test with if you'd like. But, for the price of the "OEM" I'd certainly give it a shot. If you have it ready and pull the other one out fast you won't loose much fluid and it shouldn't take long to verify the repair.

I appreciate the generous offer, but I'm not going to hassle you. I'll put in the order for the "OEM" tonight and hope for the best. Worst case scenario, it is $35 and a lesson learned when diagnosing this issue for others.

I would do the clutch training piece for sure. The grinding at idle ... not good. has a clutch ever been put in?

May very well be the original clutch.

I have a clutch with my 6 speed swap so I may end up deciding what is the best course of action if this sensor does not fix the immediate issue.

Funny, last year it was up on jack stands for about a month while I worked on the rear subframe reinforcement / bushing refresh.

This car loves me

Well, I have some good news about my issue.

The speed sensor and temp sensor came in from ECS.

Upon dropping the plastic shields, I uncovered the following. No idea how this happened but I'm guessing something was hungry outside.

Wonder if I can solder this back together
