Default How rare is the E36 Slicktop??

I was wondering if there is any kind of registry for Slicktop models? or numbers that were produced. Im not just talking about the M3 any model would be great. Or was it just a option and no would know how many were made.

Most cars were delivered with ‘optional’ sunroof, mainly on the brief that a car without a sunroof would not sell.

The short answer is no one knows. It’s just too small of a detail on a run of too many cars to compile all the information about it.
If I had to guess though I’d bet 1/30 I see are slick tops.

Not to be rude but maybe 1/30 in Canada, That might be true but its definitely a different number here in the US. Damn i wish it was 1/30 here i don't even think its close to 1/300

Anyone can correct me if i am wrong

I’m talking about on the internet. They aren’t that rare. Either way, it’s a random guess since it’s pretty trivial.

For the E36 (M and non-M), the slick top is surely very very rare today because it used to be factory standard wheere as the sunroof was an option. In the early 1990s, many of the European model E36 came out standard without a sunroof, eg. 320i.

However, because of later market demand, almost 99.9% of the E36 shipped later came with a sunroof. In fact, the slick top E36 was priced lower and the ones with sunroof were more expensive.

Fast forward, nowadays it is actually not easy to come by a slick top E36. It is more sought after in my opinion, especially for collectors and track day racers given its rarity in the market and weight saving advantages. Today, a E36 slick top would hold much better value vs another E36 with sunroof (if everything else is same spec)

In my point of view, an E36 slick top is factory "lightweight" and that means a lot to me! I happen to own a slick top E36 M3 Sedan Estoril Blue with factory head unit delete, speaker delete as well as manual rear window (roller). I save about 40+ kg, that is great advantage on the track.

There are also some very limited number of slick top Euro E36 M3 and most of those cars also came with aluminum doors as options. A lot of weight saving there as well but very difficult to come by and price is very expensive as well nowadays.

In 1999 when I heard that E36 production was coming to an end , I went to BMW Seattle and wanted to order a Estoril slick top, manual Seat, Coupe, black interior and initially they wanted 50 percent deposit as the salesman didn’t think he could sell a non sunroof car if I was to back out.

If you’re not a track racer, why would you want a slicktop?

In the US the sunroof was never std. It was always an option.

95ish% of all M3's sold in the US were ordered by the dealer for inventory. They almost always selected all the options. No cost leather, sunroof, cruise control, the heated seats, and the 18 button OBC.. And they usually sold every one they got.

When I went to order mine, the dealer had one almost on the boat. It was almost what I wanted. It had the Dove gray leather, where I really wanted the black cloth... He actually gave me a good deal so I took that spot and car. (Sticker was $42,xxx) and I paid 38K.. Picked up the car 4 weeks later.

Still wish I had held out for the black cloth... lol

Yea well... You know what they say about hindsight. I'm sure that's why there are so many lux package cars too.

My car is slick top, they're not that common and EVERYONE asks about it. TBH I would have theoretically still bought my car if it had a sunroof, but the fact that it doesn't made it more enticing since it's rare, because racecar, etc etc etc...
