Default heated seats turn off soon after pressed?

it was kinda cold on my drive home today so i tried out my heated seats for the first time. i pressed the button and it lit up then about 20 seconds latter the light went out and the seat certainly didnt heat up. i tried the pass side and i didnt notice it go out but i didnt pay attention as i couldnt see the switch while in 5th gear.

but my drivers side heated seat certainly dosnt do anything but light up for a second then go out. hmmm ive never got my hands dirty on climate control stuff asside from pull the ac out of my e28..

anyone have a clue?

First I'd check the power connection under the seat. That's simple enough to do in a few minutes.

Second you can check the connection under the switch by removing the shift boot and popping out the switch.

Take it from there.

so the temp dropped today an i finally remembered that my heated drivers side heated seat dosnt work. ive checked connection under the seat and under the switch and they are connected. but when i press the heated seat button the light illuminates on the switch then about 5 seconds latter it goes out.

seeing how the passenger side works, or at least the light stays on i havent sat in it yet to find out. but id assume the issue has to be in the drivers seat or associated wiring for the drivers side. i dont know at the moment im only just getting on troubleshooting, but if anyone has any input it would be appreciated.

I'd check the elements. Unplug the harness under the seat and check for continuity with a multimeter on the seat side of the harness.

For a price point I think the elements run about $50 each from BMW, there is an upper and a lower element in each seat. I had an upholstry shop replace a lower element for me on my vert and they charged me $80.

OP, did you ever resolve this?

At this point he probably moved on, but its worth a shot as I am having the exact same problem.

On a side note, do both the bottom and seatback heat up? I think lately my seatback hasnt been working and it might be the reason this is happening.

Backrest and cushion have their own heater mat. If one is broken, the other one still works.

I remember swapping out the switch an i got the back section to work. The base didnt, an another switch didnt make any change, so my thought was the seat base heater died an killed the switch.

Pull the plugs under the seat and test with a MM for continuity. That'll quickly tell you if the heater mat is still ok or not.
