That's hilarious... so there's a law that says your driver's side mirror has to show less because (some) people don't have the mental agility to to work out (every time they get in the car, again and again) that the image in the mirror isn't a good gauge of distance... on one side of the car only?!?

Pretty much. I think it’s one of those cases where they made a specification without thinking of the consequences. Sort of like how US regs require headlights to have a low beam and high beam, and the way it’s worded disallows things like the adaptive high beams in euro cars.

Passenger side technically doesn’t have to have a mirror at all, so I guess there’s no wording excluding convex mirrors.

I mean that’s the case in Europe now as well. Pretty much no car since the mid 90s has glass lenses.

Yes, but the euro one might be even wider angle. I’ve never compared on the e36
