Default SMG Trouble

Hey all, I had this odd problem yesterday night. I was driving home after from Oakland to Sacramento after watching the Warriors game. It was stormy and rain was coming down hard. I was in 6th gear behind a mustang. I dropped it to 4th to overpass him and my car just bogs down and feels like if I had hit the rev limiter. I get off of it and go back to 6th gear and continue driving.

Later down the road as I am closer to home, I decide to try it again. I drop form 6th to 4th and stomp on the gas, this time the car bogs down like if no gas was being pumped by the fuel pump, this time the car feels like it was kicked out of gear. RPM was at 0 I wasn't getting any gears and the my SMG Light started flashing I kept shifting to see if it would catch any gears but nothing. Then all of a sudden a hard kick came in and got 2nd gear back. SMG light kept flashing then all of a sudden it went away. This morning I tried it again and the same problem persist. If I gradually get on the accelerator, it doesn't act up. If I step on it quickly it acts up.

Help, has anyone had similar issues or know what can be the problem?

Can you describe what this "SMG Light" icon looks like?

Grab some error codes, if you get 36 or/and 37 it's bad gear position sensor

The light was the Gear Cog with the Exclamation point in the center.

I agree, getting the codes should the first thing to help figure things out since different issues can have similar driving symptoms. It's interesting the problem only happens when you downshift and stomp on the gas. I've had my gear position sensor go out a while back. I don't know all the ways they fail, but in my case, it was showing major issues while driving regularly, unlike your symptoms. As another possibility, do you know the condition/age of your clutch and slave cylinder? Either way, getting those SMG codes will help.

If you mean a typical obd2 reader that reads check/service engine codes, that's not going to work for getting codes off the SMG system. To get smg codes, it usually involves hooking up a laptop with special software like INPA, DIS, etc.

Another thing, The problem kicks in at about 4k rpm.

But hopefully there is a code that can help answer some questions.

To me it almost sounds like your clutch is going. The fact that it wouldn’t find gears, and then “banged into second” sounds like it slipped the clutch for super long. And in my experience, if you slip the clutch the smg cog light flashes meaning its overheating. This has happened to me. No codes followed. I turned off car, then drove and light went off. Just my thoughts. How many miles? Original clutch?
