They want new sales to stop in 2040, with no more on the road in 2050. None of that is set in stone, and I think there will be permits or something like you suggest, but I expect there will be other obstacles like expensive gas that will make it financially prohibitive for most people to continue driving the cars we have today.

Yeah, I think that'll be the inflection point. At some point there will be enough EVs on the road that gas stations are no longer a viable business model. At that point you'll have to do something like buy bottled gallons of gas at walmart/similar.

I don't think ICE cars will be outlawed in the USA-- if for no other reason than doing so would be seen as an attack on the poor, who necessarily afford to buy a new EV but can keep on keeping on with a $300 Buick/whatever.

... but I think we'll absolutely reach a point where ICE cars no longer make any financial sense for routine transportation.

No idea what the time table on any of that will be

I think the businesses adapting will drive people away from ICE cars in advance of the laws, as everything about keeping an ICE car running will get more expensive. If the government is faced with subsidizing the ICE supply chain to keep poor people on the road, it might be cheaper in the long run to subsidize poor people getting into a beater electric car or a rideshare membership with an automated fleet in order to simplify the dismantling of the gas infrastructure.

Agreed. I'm sure big oil isn't going to go quietly.

Yep. It's in their best interest to lobby and suppress alternatives to ICE vehicles. Which hopefully will buy me some more time in being able to enjoy my ICE cars until my passing.
