Assuming this car was sold in Jan 2002, the MSRP of $52,770 would be $73,500 in today's dollars if adjusted for inflation.

Hence why most cars are not considered appreciating assets. Drive your M3s folks.

Total out of pocket will be very close to the original MSRP (buyer's fee and etc)

I'm glad there are people out there who will preserve vehicles like this for future generations. Just happy I'm not one of them!

Should've saved them, at $5 a pop you just threw away a Grant Still seems funny to me how much BMW wants for a silly plastic cap

I get this with a rare, low production vehicle but M3's aren't either of these. So basically you get your money back and never drove the car.

Aren't old muscle cars like that too? I don't know the production numbers but I can't imagine they were rare and some variants sell for alot, maybe that's what the csl is for??

They didn't even get their money back on this one, still depreciated. As time goes on these will be harder to find and as I and many other people feel, there is no other car that comes close as a total package under 40k - 50k, hence some appreciation in the last couple years. My guess is most models with 60k or less will cap at 30-40k in the forseeable future. In 30, 40, 50 years years, who knows but at that time the point it doesn't really matter to our generation. Any more than 50k today and you are competing with some very cool cars that have come out in recent years that I would hesitate to take an E46 m3 over and once you get to 80k or more there is no contest with some of the Italian offerings. Anything can happen I suppose and as more people lose their minds/rational thinking abilities who knows, maybe they will pay 100k for these. Saw a vw bus for sale today for 75k, it probably sold for 1k in 1999.

But do WE, as M3 enthusiasts, own these as investments, or because we love the M3 for the car it is? I can certainly say I fall in the latter category

We invest money in these cars to maintain/modify/etc, but I wouldn't consider the cars themselves as investments .
