Default TTFS Experience

As many of you on here have seen me on the forums for the past few years and I’ve had a good amount of e46 m3s…. My current one is my 6th! So I’ve had my fair share of these cars. This current one is the only one that I’ve ever had tuned. I’ve always had in my mind that these cars are a perfect mixture of power/handling out of the factory and the s54 didn’t need much more.

This time around, I decided I want more power! I also decided I want certain parts on my car and I started with a Super Sprint Race muffler. Always wanted one, never owned one so when the opportunity arrived. I grabbed it. Then, I came across a great set of AP v2 headers with low mileage and in great shape. Snagged those too. At this point, I figured. I’d reach out to Frank Smith about tuning. I know there are many of you on here who are very anti-TTFS but I have to say, dealing with him First hand and in person is the way to go! He and his team are A+ individuals.

I prepared myself for my 4.5 hr trip that morning and hit the road. I had set up an appointment for 5:30pm but not realizing how MD traffic was, I was about 30 minutes late and Frank was very understanding. Things were running behind as well anyway so it wasn’t a big deal. With things running behind, Frank decided it was only appropriate to order dinner for me and a John (Chemmy15) who tagged along since he’s local. Coming from the Honda scene, if you waited, you were waiting… not many would pick up the tab for dinner.

Before I go into the dyno numbers/details, here’s a little background on the car:
-2005 m3
– 6speed manual
– 96k miles
-2nd owner of the car, first was an elderly lady who never beat the car at all and was pretty strict on her maintenance.
-brand new spark plugs night before the Dyno
-brand new OE BMW intake filter
-AP V2 header
-SS Race muffler
-Stock section 1 & 2

Once I got on the dyno, the results started coming in. I baselined at 293whp. Figured it was about right for a stock e46 m3 with a header and no cats. The next few runs, the car sat at around 302whp. Frank did a vanos test on the car as well and it barely passed. He told me the vanos is a little tired and isn’t working as it should…. Looks like I’ll be needing to do the beisan upgrade very soon. Frank gave me a cable to send him datalogs when I redo the vanos and he’ll adjust the tune for me. Something he didn’t have to as well.

He did some adjustments to it and we came to final numbers of 315.8whp and 258.8tq. For my mods, I’m very happy with the numbers she put down. Once the vanos is locked down and I complete the full exhaust system (catted section1 and mid-pipe), I’ll contact frank for a retune.

Overall, my experience with TTFS was great!! From talking to Khan about scheduling the appointment and working around my crazy schedule (weekends are busy for me) to picking at Frank’s brain and talking to the staff that was there. I had a great day. It’s nice to deal with people who are full of knowledge and are willing to take time to sit and chat with you about mods, options, and other general car talk. Some tuners I’ve dealt with in the past were all about getting tuned and getting me out of their shop.

I 100% recommend anyone going to TTFS. Frank and Team are awesome and stay till 1-2am if they have to tune your car. That to me says a lot.

Thanks again TTFS!

Here are some pics.

Thanks for the write-up. I want to do exhaust and a tune but I still have a lot I want to get done to make sure the car is up to par. I only have maintenance records up to 50k, so the last 20k is suspect.

Thanks Frank for taking the time to document this and for choosing to make the trip down to see us. We appreciate it and glad it was worth it.

I say this every year, but I am 100% planning a trip down to TTFS early next spring. I need to get on that dyno and see if we can get rid of these low rpm hiccups I have. Car runs beautifully as long as you don't stomp on it at low rpms.

Definitely worth the drive, I did 8+hours drive to Frank's 2 year’s ago, and it was worth it.
