Default M4 Brakes on E46 M3?

Hello,

I have just ordered a full set of M4 non ceramic callipers/discs so has anyone fitted them to the e46 and what modifications are necessary?

Thanks

Hopefully you researched the bias and piston volumes, first? Otherwise, once mounted, this could be a HUGE downgrade braking performance.

Thanks for the answer, not really in depth but I will mount it and see the outcome, I got a really good deal and if it turns put not that good I can use them on my M4.

I am very very happy with breaks on my M4

Glad for you, but that's unrelated to how they'll perform on the M3.

Unless you're exceedingly lucky, this change will likely be a downgrade.

Besides figuring out how to mount a set of brakes that aren't designed for e46 m3, determining if they'll work properly is another matter. There are A LOT of factors that go into a proper brake set up. I'm glad you got a good deal on them, but you may want to consider selling them to purchase another set, unless there isn't a ton of work required to make them fit, or the caliper piston surface areas and the master cylinder combined with your're rotor diameters all come out to a usable brake bias, then you're in great shape, but like mentioned above, you will be extremely lucky if it works out. The likelihood is like hitting a dart board, blind folded, from another room, while having a seizure, so good luck!

Why don't we have the OP gather the data needed to calculate the brake bias before jumping down his throat?

Admittedly, I don't think the F8x brakes will work but it sounds like the OP is the first to try the swap.

I agree, let someone figure out brake bias first. Besides you could install a proportioning valve also.

That being said, the calipers would probably look sick, but IMHO, it's too much work. I have done a Frankenstein conversion like that before, 135i BMW Performance Brakes on to e30 M3. In the end I did not save much if anything in cost over an established BBK, and it was a ton of work, trial and error machining brackets and hubs.

Bottom line, it worked well, looked great and was one of a kind, but I will [probably never attempt it again.

As I said before, someone has to be the first to pull the trigger and do some R&D

My friend has fitted the M4 callipers on his E46 combined with original BMW performance one piece disc:

There is absolutley no problem in relation brake cylinder/piston size and works out fine.

Only modification was a custom adapter made.

Like I said, it can be a nice set up, but I learned the hard way that it's not worth the time and effort to reinvent the wheel, over something that is already available. I don't see how these are cheaper or better than the 996 Brembo's for example?

I don't want to knock these calipers, they might be awesome, but generally BMW does not make the best calipers in the business. Just look at the fiasco with the 135i Performance Brakes. They were made by Brembo, but BMW had them use phenolic caliper pistons, instead of ceramic, and then they had problems with them melting.

Be that as it may, I'd rather stick with something that is proven already, unless I see a huge upward potential in price or performance, which I don't with these. The only thing you will have is cool factor for being the only one with them.
