I'm paid appropriately so I don't care about nor expect bonuses. Raises/promotions are commensurate with performance which seem to work out well. This 5% bonus was in addition to their yearly raise?

Then again I don't work in finance, which seems to operate on another planet in terms of bonuses or so my friends in finance tell me.

I'm curious what the law says about the reasons why a company can fire you.

I was always under the assumption that as long as it wasn't based on race/religion/sexuality/etc. it's all legit. I'm sure the company can dig up some dirt on them like violation of company resources (i.e. they surfed the interwebs on Black Friday using a company computer) and use that as the excuse.

Depends on where you live/hiring conditions. Many states have "at will" employment laws.

Some people are so weird. If they had issues they should have brought them up appropriately. Sounds like they were given chances but were oblivious.

Not sure what constitutes a good bonus anymore. Most engineers I know never make more than 5% on a bonus. At my last job, ~2% and this one ~3-4%. I believe once you hit supervisor or above the bonus range increases of course. Then of course different fields have varying bonus ranges. If I'm not mistaken, sales people usually have lower salaries with much larger bonuses. So many variables really.

It depends if they are in an at will state, but even then it is very difficult for a company to terminate someone without cause. Negative performance should be well documented with corrective action items in place.

Based on OP, it sounds like the employees were performing their duties above expectations, hence the bonus. The company has a public FB page where anyone (including employees) can post a comment. Although the employees actions were not the wisest choice, the picture doesnt seem inappropriate.

Really surprised your HR group allowed the termination. I would expect the employees to obtain representation and begin the motions of wrongful termination. Theyll throw everything under the sun in an attempt to build a case and demand a large settlement. The company will eventually settle for a smaller amount.

Isn't a bonus supposed to be a bonus? I personally would be grateful to even get one. The small business I work at gave out bonuses for the first time in 10 years several months ago. It was such a welcomed surprise.

The fact that they are expecting a bonus and then deem it low is ridiculous to me. I'm on your side on this one.

u srs?

I'm not here to litigate it. Let's just say the action is the proverbial straw that broke the camel's back, not the sole reason, and in direct contradiction to the employee handbook they were given, agreed to, and contributed to over the years.
