RFI/tap cards are different.

Technology that protects customers is helpful. Not the gimmicky "save yourself a few seconds during checkout" enhancements.

My bank sent me a new debit card a while back which had the tap to pay capability. I also had a credit card with that same feature. When I take public transportation in the mornings, the readers have the tap function too. For a full week, I was being charged three times for my commute to and from work.

I'm lucky I check my bank and CC statements often or else who knows how long that would have went on. I told my bank and CC company to send me non-tap cards right away.

Nope. Not everybody has the technology to process them yet but as of October, the banks shifted liability of fraud onto those merchants who are behind the times, or small enough that they can't or do not want to afford the new readers and required programming. As always, the banks are protecting themselves first, but it does add a layer of protection for the consumer as well. Chip cards are common place in Europe and Asia and have been for years.

The RFI/Tap cards came out several years ago and literally send out a signal, much like ApplePay or any of the other pay-by-smartphone apps. The Chip-on-card is the new standard in credit cards and everyone will have one within the year that replaces the old style, poorly secured credit cards with the magnetic strip. Cards in the US will still have the strip along with the embedded chip while the transition takes place.

Merchants were required to switch over Oct. 1 but many have not or they have the new readers but have not activated them yet, and the banks are behind in sending out the new cards.

Again, it's all new to the Great America, but it's old news overseas. We've had piss poor credit card security for years now and no one GAF. Nation of 5 year olds.

One of my cards has both the magnetic strip and chip. I can only recall using a chip reader at Target. How do these protect against fraud better than magnetic strips?

Much harder to counterfeit.

If someone copies a mag stripe, they can easily replicate that data over and over again because it doesn't change. Meanwhile Chip card is used for payment, the card chip creates a unique transaction code that cannot be used again.

This....

is like a movie where the actor in a movie points out the ridiculousness of the film's premise. It kinda makes you question the what the fuk the writers were thinking in the first place.

Terrible cards if you're not going to do them with PINs (a la Europeland). Just ridiculous.
