Default Dealer says thermostat needs replaced

Hi,

Finally took my 04 with 96k in for the driver airbag and dealer says Thermostat needs replaced $775. There was no codes when I dropped it off.

Can they really tell from a inspection on whether its bad?

I had planned on a cooling system overhaul this winter when it was closer to 100k and prefer to wait if possible and do both the thermostat and water pump at an Indy at the same time.

GG I think I bought my thermostat for $40 and installed it in an hour with little coolant loss. Just a quick top-up/bleed and was good to go!

Sounds like BS - ask them to show you why it's bad

$775 to change a $50 Tstat? I just replaced my entire cooling system for around the same price. Radiator, Pulleys, Belts, Water Pump, Tstat, and installed a Electric Fan with N15 mounts.

Yep.... Crazy huh. They also wanted $225 to replace a turn signal that had moisture in it.

Highly recommend you try it yourself. Super easy to do.

$40 part. Buy the Wahler brand one - its OE.

Like wolf I replaced my entire cooling system for about that price

The dealer said my freshly flushed brake fluid needed to be replaced. Literally flushed a week before...

How is your temp gauge behaving? But yes $775 seems nuts.

Ha same here on the Brake fluid (had it changed 3 wks ago).... I thought about changing the cooling system. Done a bunch of other work, struts, FCABs, RTABs, brakes and figure I can probably do this too.

On really hot days last summer it would get just short of 3/4's when stopped in traffic. Then went back down as I drove. 95% of the time its right in the middle. I had the coolant changed 3 weeks ago trying to see if that would help it.
