Extremely silly: do all M3s come with a remote key fob for door locking? Mine works great but doesn't look very factory like.

No, none came with remote locking or alarms, it was never an option from the factory. ALL of them were aftermarket. There were dealer installed, BMW branded, Alpine alarm that could lock the doors. And all E36's were prewired for alarms and telephones.

You could even install a diode the enables the double lock. I think the instructions are still on Jim's "unofficial BMW" web page. Basically, you install the diode to allow the alarm's lock pulse to go to both the lock and the unlock wires at the same time. The same a turning the key in the door fully to the right. The diode prevents the unlock pulse from getting to the lock wires.

For information purpose. And showing off obviously, over here in EU we did get a factory keyfob as master key. Although not standard unless spec'd. (either with or without factory alarm)

And it unlocks a pretty fantastic motor.

It does indeed.

PS it’s not M3 specific. Any E36 spec’d with remote entry or alarm got this key.
Not the early models. Iirc it coincides with the introduction of the GM4, which controls the factory alarm.

Here you could also have a dealer installed one (DWA 3/4/5) and you’d gotten a separate fob.

All M3 Evo's came with that option ticked here in NZ, in fact you couldn't "untick" it.

Also, from 1997 all e36's (indeed all BMW's) came with factory alarm and integrated keyfob.

There’s always country specific’s.

I have various pricelists from different years/countries and it’s interesting to see what things were options or standard equipment.
