Default I think it's the SMG pump...hopefully not.

Hey hey forum!

If you are reading this, it usually means I'm having a bad day.

Took the M out for a drive today. SMG kicked me out of gear, and began flashing (0) in neutral. Sat at a light while everyone was honking at me, I continued trying to put it in gear and it would not go. Thew it in R and it engaged...much to my surprise...but I couldn't really go anywhere in rush hour traffic. So I shut the car off and began to call for a tow. Went back a few mins later and luckily it fired up again and I got it off the road. Drove it to a safe zone and headed for a parking lot and decided to increase the throttle and as that made the pump work harder to shift from 2-3, it kicked me into N again. Rolled to a stop and shut it down. Tried to turn it back on and nothing. The pump would not engage any gear and remained in N.

I swapped out the salmon relay - no luck. I checked the 40amp fuse that normally blows if the SMG pump is shot - was not blown. The resovoir for the SMG fluid with the ChF11s oil is completely full to the top (which worries me if that pump over primed and fried itself). Engine light came on and COG light. Scanned and found 3 transmission codes and 1 engine code using my Carly:

Engine / Motor
Fault Code: 0000B1
Fault Explanation: MIL-external infoault Code: 000038

Fault Explanation: :hydraulic pressure / symptom GLUE / Duty hydraulic unit
Fault Code: 000035

Fault Explanation: :Solenoid valve coupling
Fault Code: 000035

Fault Explanation: :Print ribbon HE undershoot / Gear monitoring 3

I had the car towed to my trusted Indy because at this point I was out of options. My Indy is pretty good but I'm hoping anyone with similar symptoms can chime in and possible toss out some ideas in case my Indy leads me down an "incorrect" path.

Clutch/flywheel/slave cylinder replaced at 172k kilometers. Car currently at 195k kilometers. Only comes out in the Spring/Summer. In the last 100kms I replaced the rear diff oil, the tranny oil, engine oil, and sucked out and replaced the SMG ChF11s fluid. Ensured the pump primed and filled to proper mark on cap.

Thanks guys,

F

i suggest you search the thread "summer time blues". that will inform you of everything. After yo finished reading that, search "smg pump reconditioning". After that search "smg relocation". Do it in this order. You will then fully understand your problem and how to fix it.

Thanks for the response. I read all that...well grazed it. Temp today was 17'c and I literally had been on the road 8 mins when this began...I don't think heat had anything to do with it. There could be more in there that I'm missing...

run a pressure accumulator test. If your accumulator holds pressure then it's most likely your smg pump electric motor on it's way out. Burkhart sells a smg rebuild kit to fix this issue.

Is that something my indy should be able to do? I mean he is the one that replaced my clutch 20k kilometers ago...so I hope he can. I'll make sure to recommend that.

Is this the kit...funny enough someone on local Craig's is selling one:

2 things that come to mind you need to check - SMG pump motor, and slave/gear position sensor (they are one unit). After the car has been sitting and you open the door - how long does the motor run (in seconds)? Does it sound healthy or kinda whiny and lethargic?

Well when I left the car and went home to get my kids/dinner etc, I came back 2 hrs later. Upon unlock and door open, pump never primed.

Almost guaranteed pump motor then. ECS and Burkhart carry then for reasonable price ~$600. Install is pretty straightforward, but requires system bleed/adaptations run.

After everything I read online, that's my guess as well. Someone locally is selling the kit for $750CAD. Is there anything else I should have replaced while we're in there?

Any idea how long it usually takes to re & re a pump? I wonder if I should tackle this. I've been contemplating purchasing software for the M and this might be a good reason to.

I'm not 100% sure how easy/doable it is to install a SMG ECU with a tune on it .. But I have the TTFS tune on my SMG ECU and I just did the 6MT swap. I would include the tune on a flash drive and cable that was included. Maybe someone can chime in.
