Default 1997 Techno Violet M3/4/5 Slicktop

Hello everyone, welcome to my new journal for my e36 m3. My name is Boston and I have been a long time lurker in the e46 m3 forum. I own a 2002 Jet black m3 manual coupe and recently sold my e46 325i. On January 15th my friend texted me to let me know he was selling his e36 m3 in order to get an e90 m3. I thought I would check it out.
I knew this color was rare along especially when paired with the 4 doors and manual transmission. The car was in rough condition, and I planned to purchase it, fix it up, and sell it. If anybody is interested in purchasing this car in a few months let me know. It would be perfect for a track build. I have heard there is only 52 techno violet m3/4/5 with a manual transmission. Possibly under 10 in this spec without a sunroof. If this was in mint condition, it would be a unicorn.

1997
Techno Violet
4 door
5 speed manual
Bilstein Shocks
H&R Springs
Sunroof delete
Salvage title (Accident back in 2012)*Air bags did not deploy*
8 Owners

The car is a little rusty, and has a few problems, but nothing too concerning. I will need to address many things and restore it as good as I can. There are many things that need to be addressed. The seats are cracked, ripped, and super dry. Like they have never been conditioned before. I noticed the interior was grey with black seats, meaning they were swapped in. The headliner was missing, along with one A pillar. The panels below the steering wheel are missing, due to the ignition tumbler being broken. The car must be started with a screwdriver lol. The car came with 2 10 inch subs, with wiring that didn't go under the carpet.

Even though the car isn't in the best condition, the previous owner (my friend) who works at a European shop, took great care of it mechanically.
Here is a list of the maintenance he completed in the last few years:
Head gasket
Valve cover gasket
Clutch master cylinder
Control Arms
Bilstein Shocks
H&R springs
Wipers
Brake pads
Brake pad sensors
Air filter
fuel filter
Thermostat
Tie rods
Engine mounts
Transmission mounts

I purchased this car in the middle of winter. It sit for a few months while it was below 0 degrees. I felt so bad letting it sit out in the snow haha.

This shows all the salt and sand that builds up during Iowa winters. It was awful this year. This is in the court that I live in.

The interior was filthy. I first started with a deep cleaning. Took the seats out, and vacuumed up everything.

Flushed power steering fluid. Look how dirty the old fluid was

Oil change (I spilled) also did coolant

Here is the current state of the car. We still have more work to do but we gave it a full cleaning inside and out. We flushed and topped off fluids that needed it. I still need to flush the brakes. The interior is looking soooo much better. Look forward to seeing a before and after getting the hood painted. It's atrocious right now and embarrassed to be seen in it LOL. More updates soon. Thanks for viewing. Let me know if you have any suggestions.

It's a shame it's salvaged and from a salt use state.

Best of luck with the build.

I agree. People wonder why low mileage clean examples are going up in value. At least I can enjoy it and not worry too much.

People who let their cars to get to this condition, should be hang by their balls.

This! That interior was hammered! Even my beater 4Runner with 320k miles is in better shape.

good lord that thing has had a hard life. Good job trying to give show it some respect in later years. I agree that you can at least drive it without caring too much about it.

Good luck with the project. 8 owners...crazy! Definitely don't see too many manual techno sedans.

I still can’t get over that interior . I could run my plumbing business outta that car and it would still look nicer than that .

God bless you op for saving that thing .
