^ Agreed.
Though, at the time, it was a tremendously nice handling car. And US lowly engine aside, it was pretty powerful too.
Looks are subjective, and I'm a big fan of how E36 looks.
Overall, I think it was a great review.

Guess how you look at it. Some things are bad, depending on what year/material you car has.

But man, that sticky rubber coating the E46 and many of its peers use. That's just aweful.

Regardless of looks, which is a matter of taste, but pure about parts breaking down, the E36 really isn't that bad. I even doubt it's worse than the E36.

With everything else being equal. Climate, parking location, etc.

Does it have the best engine ever made by BMW? No. That's US or ECE
Best looking? No, but it does have its charm
Best chassis? No, but it is really nice though
Best interior quality? Not even close
Most successful race car? Not that I know of

But as a package, especially for the price, I think it's excellent. The car is what it is. It's not going to be the most dramatic driving experience, the fastest, the best looking, but it's in general a wonderful car. I wouldn't call it the best though, but certainly not trash. I actually love driving mine in certain situations more than my E92 M3 and Z4M Roadster.

My 2 cents
Yup, all of this. I'm really enjoying my E36. In fact, I've been enjoying it way more than I thought I would. In a way, my comment is similar to the one made in the video about it not being as bad as he was expecting.

On paper, especially compared to its younger siblings, the E36 doesn't appear "that great". In reality, it's so "not that bad" that it is actually quite good and a blast to drive.

Looks are definitely subjective, but as cars get more and more bloated and "styled" I think the simple lines of the E36 will only look better and better.

Pretty cool, I agree with what he said about how there's a brilliant car in there waiting to be let out with a few mods. I kind of feel that way about most cars though.

I think if you were to drive a well sorted one, you'd probably understand what the fuss is about.

I thought that too, so I bought one. It was so disappointing. They look amazing, it was so cool to see it sitting in my garage. That was the best part of owning the car, looking at it. The driving experience left so much to be desired. After the honeymoon phase of buying it wore off, I couldn't wait to sell it. I'm sure this is blasphemy to many, but it just wasn't that great.

My E30 M3 experience was the epitome of, don't meet your heroes....

It's slow as balls and the interior sucks. I'd rather an M3 GT over pretty much any BMW new or old. It just looked right.

What did you expect? Its a small-ish 4-banger with no torque which has to be revved real high to get any power out of it. I think your disappointment is a result of your unrealistic expectation about the car, that's all.

Sean is fairly well versed in BMW. I would give him more credit than that. A lot more.

That's surprising but to each their own. And I suppose ownership is a totally different game than driving one for an hour or two.

If I had the money and a place in my life, I'd still probably buy an E30 M3 over a similar vintage air cooled 911, for example.

More credit than what? That his expectation was in line and the driving experience still sucked? Wouldn't that mean that he expected it to suck? I don't see logic in your response aside from stating that Sean is well versed in BMW (which may or may not be true).
