Sounds like the new head unit + aux install is the best way to go! I like what Paolo_M3 did with his setup.

I tucked and installed my oem aux cable down to the ash tray. Popped the cigarette Asher out and epoxy'd a washer in. Looks clean and not in the glovebox!

I have something similar in my car. The now defunct Audiovox Dice Mediabridge which in my experience has been kind of glitchy.

I installed the OEM aux cable in the empty spot next to the passenger seat warmer button. I took all that area apart, drilled the correct sized hole in the plastic, and screwed it on without the plate that says "AUX INPUT"

Looks extremely clean and unobtrusive IMO, and I use a short ~1 foot cable to keep that clean as well.

Unfortunately I can't find any pics ...

I'm installing the OEM bmw aux kit here in about 15 minutes. I'll get back with some pics and my experience. I have a 2003 business cd.
