Default crank but no start

Hi All,

I have a 2002 BMW M3 (148k miles) and my car just died 2 days ago while i pulled out of a parking garage, 2nd gear, the car bogs down and dies, try to start it, it will crank but will not start. I did some research on the web and tried the following:

1- 20amp fuse in the glove box is fine
2- Fuel pump relay in the trunk replaced (the green one)
3- Checked if the pump is getting power (it is)
4- I don't hear the pump priming when i turn the ignition key to on
5- Disconnected MAF sensor

I am in the process of replacing the fuel pump (actually upgrading it to DW400), i hope this is the issue, any doubts?

Thank you

Have you tried disconnecting the MAF sensor and see if it runs?

yes i did..but i don't think the MAF would cause the pump not to prime when i turn the ignition key to on, correct?

Good point, I'm not sure. I had similar case of crank no start (my fuel pump was working fine) and it was was a bad MAF, but at the same time, disconnecting the MAF and it runs doesn't necessarily mean bad MAF sensor.

If you hadn't replaced the fuel filter in a while, I'd also suggest doing that while you're at it.

Wrong relay. The black one is the fuel pump relay.

I tried the jump idea that i found in this post and i still had issues so i don't think its the relay;

http://www.m3forum.net/m3forum/showthread.php?t=551657

They didn't have the black relay at the dealership and said the green one is a relay for the pump as well, I don't know why there is 2 but i bought the green one just to see if that was it but obviously it wasn't, $20, the black one is not in stock and its $120.. it sux that you buy it and if its not it then i'm out of $120..
I just upgraded my pump (DW400) and will install it in 2 hrs when i get home, i hope this is it...fingers crossed

UPDATE:

After replacing the pump the car starts up, it takes a few cranks but i think there is air in the system, I will drive to work tomorrow so we shall see if the long cranking goes away.

Looking at the relay block diagram, I believe the relay output is pin2 and not pin6, and so you should bridge pin2 (to fuel pump) to pin5 (12V).

No wonder why your car didn't start after the relay bridged.
