Default Top speed?

I was coming home today very early in the morning or late night with open roads after a busy day. I helped my friend put a 4.6 2v on his stang we bolted it on to the K member and put it in the car. And it was really late like 1:50AM ish and I just wanted to go home. I thought to myself I've got laser jammers in the M3 why not open her up a little. I know a big risk but whatever.... I decided to open her up a little. I went upto 130MPH until I backed off. What's the highest anyone has gotten to the top speed? My car has a dinan throttle body and dinan tune

Default Re: Top speed?

A stock US model E36M3 won’t do 172 mph. First, a stock car has limiter that is in the 130 mph range. Second, the stock gearing won’t allow it — neither the 95 with 3.15 nor the 96-99 with 3.23 and the stock 6750 rpm redline in the upper gears. Remove the speed limiter and 160 mph might be possible on a good running car (these cars are 20+ years old and many have had multiple owners, not all of whom have taken good care of the car, so there are plenty of underperforming examples).

With mods, a 7200 rpm limiter, top speed delimiter, more is possible. I know of one guy who broke 190 years ago in a built motor turbo E36M3 with gearing or trans changes. I think these cars feel a little light at very high speeds so be careful —not so much for yourself since you are accepting the risk but for anyone else who might be on the road.

Haha, ok.

I've done 146 on a straight 4-lane stretch of I20 at like 4am once. Pretty scary actually.

Exactly, I was a little nervous even though there were barely any cars and my high beam was on. I might have to try it out some other time how fast mine can go upto

6 speed you’d probably get up to 155 range. Dropped to a 2.91 rear diff (or whatever the low verts had) and you could get higher. Then you’re battling drag because as speed increases, parasite drag increases threefold.

156 is when I ran out of gear/rpm, full bolt ons + cams, 7150 redline.

Got there easy, haven’t been over 100 since.
