Default Re: 235 snow tires on staggered wheels?

Thread resurrection alert!

So I'm going to run my staggered Contours this winter and my only question is should I bother doing 235s on the rears and if so which tire height ratio (40 or 45)? Or should I not fuss with it and just keep them 245s oem sizing for snows? I've done all of the above in the past and even 225s out back, but like Nick says, it does look so ridiculous...

Generally speaking, narrower is better on ice. I run 215s on 7.5" Contours and they are perfect.

I *think* 235 needs a 45 profile on these cars, but I'm not positive. A 235/45 comes out to just over 25", which is where you want to be. 235/40 is under 24.5 inches, which I'm pretty sure is too small.

i ran 235/40 last year and they were fine. This year i have a staggered set 245 and 225 so we'll see how they do. I bought them second hand from an old lady who thought they were all the same. Just worked out that they were the correct staggering.

235/40s work well on 8.5" wheels.

Truth. Narrower the better for snow tires. Just keep rolling radius within a couple percent of each other and you should be good. I've raced in rally for a few years now, and the hyper-competitive guys were running pretty narrow tires on snow and ice.

Well after running some numbers on a tire height ratio calculator, I'm thinking maybe just do 245/40/17s on the rears for snow tires. The 235s don't come in 40 only 45 (all seasons do but that's not what I'm looking for). 235/45/17s seem like they will look a bit balloonish (read: too tall). Hoping for another mild winter season here in Buffalo. Last year we got lucky, only had to shovel about 3-4 times if I recall correctly.

OP, run 215/45-17 for your winter setup.

Ha. I just realized this was my old thread.

If anyone cares, I went with Blizzak WS-60s on 7.5" Contours. 215/45/17. They have been tremendous. Like drag the front spoiler through snow tremendous.

And with the chunkier design of the WS series, they really don't look super skinny. Some spacers out back might have been nice, but that's as much a function of the 7.5s as anything.
