CPI Stepped Headers with CPI RTX on E46 M3 (We have a Z4M RTX as well)

Final run on same M3 with the following mods:
  • CPI Single Step Headers
  • CPI Rasp Terminator /Crossover (RTX)
  • CPI resonated section 2 (one-off prototype)
  • CPI Drop-in Panel Filter
  • Active Autowerke Underdrive Pulleys
  • Active Autowerkes Gen 6 Muffler
  • Denso Iridium Spark Plugs
  • Fresh Valve Adjustment
  • TTFS Tune

If you have been waiting for a reasonably priced, high quality stepped header – well your wait is over. Introducing the CPI Single Step Headers. These headers have been a long time in the making. We had an initial prototype set of stepped headers about this time last year. I did not post much about them since they were the first set and to be honest, not up to standard (out of the box). With some modifications, they we installed on a dedicated track M3 (that was completely stock), dyno tested, and spent the season on the track. I have dyno graphs but suffice to say, the track M3 put down 297HP and 247 LBFT of torque. Typical stock M3 number are ~280HP and 237TQ - so, approximately +15HP and +10TQ (not bad). No initial fitment issues of after a full season on the track.

Back to the drawing board, made some tweaks, and went looking for another manufacturer. After what seemed like forever, we found a manufacturer experienced with headers and we now have a high quality single step headers.

Custom Performance Innovations Single Step Headers for BMW E46 M3

Key Features:
  • The CPI Single Step headers are all 321 stainless steel (with satin finish instead of high polish) and all joints are TIG welded.
  • The single step design is unique in that the lead pipe is fitted into trailing pipe (design change over first prototype). Other stepped header designs swedge the end of the lead pipe and fit it over the trailing pipe. The CPI Single Step design provides for increase exhaust port scavenging and smoother exhaust flow.
  • The 3-way merge pipe is fitted into the exhaust collector pipe (design change over first prototype). Other header merge pipes are swedge at the end to fit over the exhaust collector pipe. The CPI 3-way merge design provides for smoother exhaust flow into the collector pipe.
  • The primary pipes are integrated with the flanges so that there is no edge, lip or other exhaust flow obstructions at the engine exhaust port (design change over first prototype).
  • Two exhaust collector flanges (one fixed and one loose) that will connect to OE section 1 or any after market section 1 with the OE flange configuration
  • Two O2 bungs on each header and one EGT bung on bank 2 header.

Unique Design Aspects:

Lead pipe (1.65” (42mm) OD) fits snugly into trailing pipe, which has a 1.78” (45mm) OD.

3-way merge pipe is fitted into the exhaust collector pipe (which is 2.33” OD).

Primary pipes are integrated with the flanges and have a 1.56” (40mm) ID which is slightly larger than the 1.52” (38mm) ID exhaust port on the engine head. The header gaskets also have a 1.56” ID so they mate perfectly with the header flanges.

Jack,

How do these compare to the Agency Power headers? I already have the AP headers on my car paired with your Euro200R and Evolve tune, wondering if stepping up to these will be worth it.

Thanks.

You would definitely pick up some low and midrange torque and a little HP at the top end. As a repeat customer, I can certainly work out something with you. Shoot me a PM.

Do not hesitate to purchase these if you are in the market for catless headers. You will not be disappointed and the price point is great.

I purchased these at the last group buy and finally only had time now to complete the install.
Fit was perfect, as if was an OE piece. No issues at all during install (just don't mix up the 02 sensors and is the perfect time to put all new ones in). No check engine lights/codes with a catted section 1.
Subjectively, I do not feel any loss if any power/torque low end...possible a very slight increase. Above 3k, it really wants to pull. Needless to say it put a smile on my face.
Next step is the TTFS dyno tune at the end of the month.

- UPDATE on LONG TERM TESTING -

Car #175, driven by Steve Ladderman, just completed his second full season with the CPI Single Step headers. He finished 5th in class (GTS3) and 10 overall in the Eastern National Championship Race. Looking forward to season 3!

Thanks to CPI for the support! The headers have been flawless. I have put these through the ringer with both sprint races and an entire endurance series last year. They keep delivering no matter what I throw at them!!
