do you hear any noise like a pump or motor when you push the top down button? make sure the trunk extension compartment is not pushed up, then see if anything is stuck. Make sure everything is closed(hood, trunk, doors) and put all 4 windows down, then try putting the top down again.

If it starts to open then it couldnt be any of the reasons you are asking about above. All of those will keep the top from moving or unlocking at all. The down button will only blink. The windows also dont have to be down, as they will autoroll down before the top begins to open...

One quick question for the OP, is your friend holding down the button or did he just hit it? If you dont hold it down during the entire opening sequence (and closing with the other button) then it will stop after it unlocks... Also the car has to be stationary or it will stop...

If the answer to that question is YES then likely you have a hydrolic pump failure or electrical failure...

Sorry, I missed out where he said the top cover begins to open I thought nothing was opening. However the computer can get confused when the autoroll down cycle begins with the windows. It is RARE but it DOES happen(I've read some other people with the same experience and it's happen to myself once as well), a couple members put the windows down first manually as a precaution so this does not occur. The car senses the windows are already down and skips this step avoiding any possible confusion.

I hope that your friend's car isn't experiencing what I went through. Here is a thread I posted on a local forum here in Canada. If it is the same thing, I hope he is still under warranty
