Default Almost traded my e36 M3 for an e39 M5

Captain' Log: When a good deal come along, usually in your best interest to strongly consider it.

When I asked a friend (who has arguable too many cars) if he would sell his 2003 e39 M5 ... he said "yes".

After borrowing it for the weekend, I keep comparing it to my e36 m3. The M5 is faster, roomier for quests, newer, iconic, etc.

BUT, it was missing something. It just wasn't an e36 m3 with it's more direct steering, more go-kart feel, nimble, more RPM hungry. And most of all, all the love/money, blood. etc. I've put into the car to get it just right.

Since I cannot convince myself to have 2 toy cars right now, I passed on the e39 m5 in favor of my e36 m3. Wow, what a hard decision. I won't even mention the price of the e39 m5 as I will get some hate messages as the price was so low.

So... e36 m3 is here to stay a bit longer. Much love to all the other e36 m3 owners out there

I wouldn’t mind to own a E39 M5 if I have extra space in my garage. It is still one of the more desirable 5 series ///M for enthusiasts and collectors.

I wouldn’t do it either. If you’ve only got room for one, and you don’t need the extra room, there’s nothing that would make me choose the m5 over the m3.

I did love the dark dark blue color. (Sorry too lazy to quote the official color)

E39 M5 is a great car. Way more substantial than the E36 as anyone who has driven an E39 knows. Much more comfortable. Lots more power and speed. Can carry more people and stuff more easily.

Won’t have the lighter, small car nimbleness of the E36, but if that is not critical to you, the E39 is worth considering. I had a 528i for years while I had my E36 and every time I drove the E39, I noticed how solid and comfortable it was compared to the E36. The M5 would have been awesome.

Ultimately, I skipped the E39M5 and bought an E90M3, which is not too far off the dimensions of the E39 and has similar power, though delivered differently, plus better handling than the E36 or E39.

E39 M5 is one of the best cars ever.

I can't wait until I have more parking space, that car's pretty high on the list for me.

I definitely think you made the right call. No doubt the e39 M5 is a great autobahn cruiser, but it feels like fat amy compared to the e36 M3. I had a 540i6 and while not as powerful as the M5, I cherish the driving dynamics of the M3 far more.
