Default Operating SMG Transmission

I have a 2004 M3 Convertible with the SMG transmission and I am unsure whether to leave the car in "N" (Neutral) or "R" (Reverse) when shutting down the engine. It seems like the car will only start with the selector in "N", but it will shut off in either "N" or "R". Can anyone advise?

just like a 6 speed manual it's best to leave the car in gear and engage the parking brake as well. That being said leave the car in 1st or Reverse.

I had also always wondered. I have never driven an SMG. Come to think of it, I have never seen one in real life!

Mine deeps at me for about 10seconds if I shut it off in 'N' but doesn't beep in '1' '2' or 'R' yes, it will only start in 'N'

You shut the car off in gear, when you're going to turn the car on before you put your keys in just slap it into neutral and then turn it on

it took me a while to figure this out.. lol. just bought my vert 3 weeks ago

You can turn off the car anyway you want, in gear (1st/Reverse) or in Neutral, which ever you are more comfortable with...
If you turn off the car in Neutral, the car will "ring" to remind you the car is in neutral. You cannot start the car while transmission is in any gear, it must be in Neutral.
Whenever I turn on my car, I do the following process:
1) Turn the key to it's second position (furthest most position before turning engine on)
2) Wait until the dashboard shows which gear the transmission is in
3) Move the gear shifter to Neutral, if necessary
4) Confirm that the dashboard indicates Neutral
5) Start the car
6) Enjoy!

I find that these steps keeps the SMG happy. When I first bought the car, I used to attempt to turn on the car as fast as possible and had some minor issues.

I do the following:

1) Leave the car in 1st gear with my foot on the brake.
2) Turn the ignition off and leave my foot on the brake.
3) With my foot still on the brake I put the car into neutral.
4) Take my foot off the brake.

What happens here is the car will remain in 1st gear since I shut it off still in gear. I move it to neutral after the ignition is completely off so the next time I get into the car, it will automatically move itself from 1st to neutral.

This is what I've gotten used to doing because I didn't want to hear the ringing and didn't want to have to switch the car into N every time I started the car.

Seems like you can shut down the SMG car how you want. I put it in neutral turn the key one click and then shift the car to 1st gear and turn off then.

When you shut down the car make sure it's set in "R" and the hand brake is set. If not, you'll find your gorgeous //M is rolling into a pole.
