Default Rpm

hey guys,
u have probibly gussed but i dont exactly have an M3 but i have like the same body (e30). i was just wondering where or how does the rmp meter hook up too the engine because about a year and a half ago my RPM meter stopped wroking. i dont know if it is the meter itself, i took it apart many times and found nothing wrong, or its the connection to the engine. if you could give me some information on this i would be very gratful. im going crazy trying to figure out whats wrong. (i have and m20 engine by the way)

I had that problem several times myself. I've been told that it is the circuit board. If your service indicator lights are out take out the circuit board and replace the two nicad batteries (AA nicad with solder tabs) in the back they have to be soldered in. Then look for any breaks in the leads and remelt the solder in the board it self. Hopefully this will fix it.

If you drive the car regularly the nicad battery should last at least 5 years. Put a good set in like sanyo or a name brand (radio shack with solder tabs is ok) since they are a pain to replace. Mine lasted about 8 years. It could also be the circuit board solder joints going bad but once you remelt the solder it should be ok for a long time. But it depends on the how the joint went bad.

What I did on mine was to solder 2 wires on the board where the batteries attach to the board and extend that outside the instrument panel where I attached a battery holder and instaled 2 rechargable NiCad batteries (from radio shack) So when the time comes to replace them there is no need to remove the instrument panel again and all I have to do is to recharge the batteries over night.
