Default Thinking of buying father in laws m3. Input please

Hello, new member, just starting to research m3 ownership. Always been a car guy and love the m3, but I don't know a ton about specific things to look for when buying one but I've been reading alot the last few days.

My father in law has an 04 m3 vert 6 speed, grey/grey with 73000 miles. HK system without nav.He has had it since 09 i believe when it had about 45k on it. He lives in Georgia. I've seen it a few times but never driven it. He mentioned selling it recently and I told him last week I'm interested. I'll be going up there in a few weeks for Christmas to really check it out and look at his maintenance folder on it. I'll have access to a lift also.

What should have been done to an 04? I've read about vanos, rod bearings and subframe issues.

On the phone he said I could have it for 12k.

Thanks in advance for any info.

Unless this car has everything wrong with it I would say 12k is a good deal. I think the three areas of concern you mentioned are the most important big-ticket items.

Give me the vin and I can give you dealership records.

VANOS and Subframe are the biggest things. Same with rod bearings, but I heard 03.5+ are less prone to that. Besides that regular maintenance + all the bushings.

Thanks, I'll try and get the vin this weekend. He is the type of guy that takes care of his s**t so I'm optimistic on the maintenance. Tires are pretty new too so that's a plus. I bet I can get him to take 11.

Here are a couple not great pics my wife took last time she was up there.

Don’t buy a convertible with a grey Interior.

Now that you know you want this amazing car, do a bit more homework. You’ll thank me later.

At that mileage and if cared for, there is nothing to talk about. It is worth 12K all day. I would still do a carfax to make sure he didnt get taken when he bought it. I wouldn't negotiate with family over 1K when it's worth more than the 12K deal he is giving you. A no mystery, cared for, maintained, M3 is well worth 12K regardless of any small issues.

OP, I'd have to agree with him. Vert, grey on grey....perhaps the most unappealing combo of any M3...for most anyway.

Agreed as well. For 12k I'd rather buy a coupe and invest some money into it that I'm going to have to eventually.

Find a clean SMG coupe and convert it to manual. Manuals are marked up so you can find clean SMG coupes for around the same price tag you are stating.

That's what I'm doing. Planning for a 6spd swap when the pump fails
