Default Re: Anyone running Euro oil filter canister with an oil cooler?

With the alternator air intake at the kidneys, it’ll suck all dirt in anyways.

I believe there is an alternator with a closed plastic case (just vented) but I cannot figure out the part number. Anyway, no problem sucking in road junk through that big opening? Thanks!
Mine has been open for 10 years but I understand the concern about stuff falling in there. You could put a screen over it and hose clamp it. I cut part of mine away for an oil cooler — I have the S54 housing and Bimmerworld 10AN adapter but capped off since I am not running a cooler. Probably the best thing is to put the duct back on. I run a euro radiator cover so no duct. Anyway no harm in 75k miles of year round street driving for me.

You mean the one with the link to the $700 alternator? I paid $200 for a rebuilt from California alternator and starter on eBay 10 years ago and it’s still going strong.

No, that is not the previous post. The one above yours, regarding the sucking in debri.

I would not worry about using the stock USA duct system sucking in debris from the front kidney areasince it was good enough design for bmw. But if using no duct consider a screen cover if worried. My car is driven year round, including rain and snow, parked outside and has been like this for 10 years and 75k miles so I am not concerned. No way would I buy a $700 alternator.

That's exactly what I meant. It will suck in more debri with the stock intake than without any ducts. Of course you can always fit a screen if you want to have some insurance, but it will suck in less than with the stock intake.

Thanks. Appreciate the feedback. I cut away enough of the plastic vent hole round to make roon for the oil line fittings. I'll probably leave well enough alone. We'll see once I get to the point where I'd typically install the vent tube.
