Default Help me bring a new exhaust to market

**Updates added to the bottom of the OP**

What's up guys,

I'm sure many of you have seen the countless threads discussing the exhaust system, and at the higher power levels (350+ WHP) the current offerings leave something to be desired (leaving power on the table, too loud or being forced to run a single tip).

I've chatting with Scott at Stromung about developing an exhaust system for our cars, that would augment the S54 from stock power levels up to the higher horsepower N/A builds.

Stromung is known for building quality exhausts that are:
  • Well engineered (30 years of experience building exhausts)
  • Designed and manufactured in the US, with US and German sourced materials
  • All pipes are Mandrel bent and 304 SS
  • Well reviewed in the E36, Z3/Z4 M community

I am looking for feedback from the community before moving forward with the development. Would you be interested in a more track focused muffler design (lighter, louder) - similar to SS Race or something thats a little tamer but still flows well but is not as loud (think SCZA, SS Sport)? He is open to doing both options, provided there is enough demand.

My personal preference is for a system that is:
  • Streetable - Minimal drone, but enough sound to give the car some bark
  • Quad tip design
  • Free-flowing to support modifications like Cams/headers
  • Sheds some weight
  • 2.5 inch piping through the system (no bottle necks)

In addition to the muffler, we have also been discussion the Section 1 and 2 and looking for ways to enhance them. If there is interest, we can build a full system (section 1, 2 and 3) or just bring a new muffler design to market.

Please let me know what you guys think! If there is enough interest, I can work with Stromung on getting an introductory group buy together!

I'd really like to keep up the innovation for this platform, so please share your thoughts!

Edit: 8/21

After chatting with Scott today, he is going to build a prototype muffler within next 2 weeks and then we are going to get a sound check on my car and refine the design from there.

To get a better sense of what you guys are interested in, can you add your username to the list and the desired exhaust section (Ex. Section 2 and 3 only)?
1. Lakere46 - Full system (section 1,2,3)
2. twentyseven - Full system (section 1,2,3) *if catted/resonated like stock*
3. C///M - Full System (section 1, 2, 3). *CATTED system 1, RESONATED dual 2.5" or single 3.5" system 2, muffler w/ 4 tips*
4. Obioban resonated dual 2.5" or single 3.5" section 2
5. MFahrer (sec 2 and 3 but not against full system) - Race style, so willing to take louder if it's lighter
6. Move_Over - section 2 and 3. Weight savings in mind. Would like quad tips.
7. XrumX - section 2 and 3. Possibly catted sec 1 also.
8. werfer - section 2 & 3. Dual 2.5" resonated section 2 with no crossover. Light, loud section 3 with 2.5" piping and quad tips.
9. Brian N - section 2 & 3. All 2.5 pipe. Conservative section 3 with slash cut offset quad 80 or 83mm tips.
10. Mr. Black - A dual 2.5 section 2 with X/H-Merge & Section 3
11. Dr M3an M3 - resonated dual 2.5in or single 3.5in section 2 + quad 83mm tip section 3 - high flow but not too loud or droney. Beveled polished tips if possible.
12. Zzyzx85 - Section 2 and 3. maybe a catted section 1. quad 80-83mm. would like to keep it civil but somewhat lighter than stock.
13. idntknow2005 - Resignated dual 2.5 section 2, possibly a tame true 2.5 section 3.
14. 10speed - resonated dual 2.5" or single 3.5" section 2, lightweight section 3.
13. idntknow2005 - Resignated dual 2.5 section 2, possibly a tame true 2.5 sectiin 3.
14. 10speed - resonated dual 2.5" or single 3.5" section 2, lightweight section 3.
15. ldev869 - Sections 2 & 3.
16. Jersey3 - resonated dual 2.5" sec 2, section 3 (tame if it is going to be an option)
17. FK - Sec 3 (lighter is preferred, loud is no problem, less drone is great, 80mm slash cut tips that say Stromung on the top of each one and the perforated inners would look awesome!)

I'd be interested in a Stromung, the unit they make for my other bucket is the only thing that sounds great on the I5.

I'd be interested in something as quiet and free-flowing as possible. I have a cut-out so I don't need any held in the loud department

Interested in a SS race clone with 2.5" piping and a dual 2.5" resonated section 2 with no crossover. I may be in the minority here but that's what I would be interested in.

This is what I have been wanting for a while. I might be hard to get consensus because higher HP cars run all kinds of different setups and have different goals with the power band.

I don't think a section 1 is necessary as most of us with higher HP will be running V1s or ARH which both require a special section 1. I think even Epic needs a special section 1.

A mandrel bent section 2 is really what we need on the market for higher HP cars. Not sure if a single 3.5 or dual 2.5 would be better. Then there is the debate on who needs the cross over and where to put the cross over if you go dual 2.5. For my application I don't even need an additional cross over. I also need it resonated.

The muffler is another hard one to nail down for me I want something conservative, but with a nice tone and sound. Some people want louder mufflers. Some as quiet as stock. It's going to be hard to agree on that one. It should have 2.5 inch piping though. Also drone free is a must like you mentioned already.

Thanks for the feedback so far! I forgot to mention in the OP this would be a 2.5 inch system. He is willing to build a jig and design both a conservative and race style section 3.

I have a Gen 1 Mevius and Gen 1 El Diablo. With the El Diablo I can feel the lack of power aka bottlenecking.

I need flow but good looking tips and finish and less noise than the Gen 1 Mevius. Also where are we at for a price bracket? I'm not selling my exhausts looool

I'd be interest in a 3.5" system that goes into the muffler and exits through quad tips (splits inside the muffler) so that you can mate with the new AR header and cat and run single all the way back to the muffler. It's lighter weight than dual 2.5 and can make lots of power.

You could basically copy the Bimmerworld design but use a different muffler and maybe a bigger resonator.
