Wow huge improvement on the interior, looks too low for my taste too. I say raise it up a bit and space the wheels out and it'll look great.

Hey everyone, checking in again.

It's been a while, but I was finally able to make some more progress on the M3. After 18 years of neglect in the New Mexico sun, I finally decided to do something about the finish and try to get the car looking a bit more presentable. This was more of a personal project of mine, trying to learn and expand my skills along with seeing how far I could take paint correction as a beginner. I'd had some minor experience with paint correction before, but nothing anywhere near this extreme. Just using a variable speed DA and some Meguiar's Ultimate Compound I was able to remove 90% of defects in the paint after 3-4 passes. Once I got to the spoiler and the roof however, it was a whole new ball game.

Rather than the paint defects coming off with the compound, I noticed the compound being "absorbed" by the paint, as in no matter what I did I couldn't get the compound to buff off the paint. At that point it was time to bust out the sand paper, starting with 2000 grit and working my way all the way up to 5000. Finally after MANY hours of wet sanding and compounding the roof and spoiler, I was able to achieve the shine I was looking for. I'd say all in, I'm over 20 hours total into paint restoration... Not perfect by any means, but MILES better than what it was! I'm happy

Anyway, on to the pictures...

Here's how bad the car was when I started. This doesn't even come close to reflecting how bad it really was, and that's saying something.

My first pass on the roof and compound being "absorbed" into the clear.

Finally coming clean after sanding.

Roof is finally done.

Onto the spoiler...

Finally, the rest of the car and the finished results after polish/wax/trim restoration.

All done!

I couldn't leave it at cell phone shots anymore, she finally cleaned up well enough to deserve her own photoshoot. I now understand why Cosmosschwarz is such a popular color, when it's cleaned up and free of defects all I can say is WOW!

Stay tuned, new additions coming soon...

Good progress man. Black paint can be a real pain in the dick and balls to keep looking nice... But when it looks good...

Great job on that paint. It looks like a totally different car.

Paint came out great! Now you just need some glass headlights and the exterior will be looking fantastic

Thanks everyone. Trying to find a clean set of OE Euro lights as we speak, I'd rather avoid Depo even though I've heard they're very good. I've also scheduled an appointment with the body shop to have the damage on the front of the car repaired (finally!), and I'm doing a trim restoration around the windows in the next few days.

Also mounted a new set of three piece forged wheels on it. Once I get the look dialed in I'll be sure to post more pictures. I think you guys will like them a lot

Default Intro/M3 Build Journal

What did you do with the old set of seats covers. I may want to buy them to experiment on some coloring and dyes
