Hey Folks --

Sorry for the delays. I've been really slammed with work and family commitments, and the E30 project got put on the back burner for a bit. My original plan was to finish it in time for some summer gravel events, but I decided to push it off and debut the car at Targa Newfoundland in September instead. I also lost my shop space, so the project is going to be finished by my friends at TC Design Motorsports in Campbell, CA.

All that said, work is back under way. The chassis and cage fabrication work has started, and here's the first completed fab work; new rear shock towers (we're fitting Reiger coilovers in the rear), added mounts to adopt the double-ear E36 rear differential cover, and completing that cage section:

We also just received some really nice custom lexan windows for the car from a UK supplier. Here's a bit of a preview:

Lots of fabrication work has completed over the past two weeks by the folks over at TC Design Motorsports. Check out the detailed pictures below:

The floor of the car stripped and prepped for the cage. Note the hole in the firewall that's the last remnant of the crash damage that needed to be repaired. You can also see the seam welding around the chassis.

Here is the firewall repaired:

The front suspension has been reinforced to handle the stress of rough roads and big jumps:

And here is the rest of the cage:

Lastly, a lot of work has been done to seal up as many of the holes in the chassis as possible, including the sunroof.

There's still lots more fabrication work, and the driveline was fitted to address any issues with clearances:

Very intereting build
I remember your car at 2014 ESPR, we finished 5th overall in our 2.5 Impreza.
Sadly no more tarmac rally.
Currently im contemplating on building E36 compact myself.
I have a very clean running car, i bought for 1700$.
For now I will use m44 engine and tranny.
Got e30 rear 4.10 LSD and axles.
Might need to get 4.44 ring/pinion

Thinking about getting used E36 sedan Reigers from EU.

How much did you pay for yours?
Do you know spring rates on yours as it set up for gravel now?
I know rear e30 is the same as e36 compact. Since e36 sedan rear shocks much taller at 630mm vs 553 mm than e30 you had made a rear turret.
How tall is the turret?

Looking forward for updates

I don't recall. I bought them through Derik Nelson at Dirtfish

I don't know right now. The shocks comes with a data sheet that lists the spring rates.

I don't know. My cage builder and fabricator measured everything and designed it to fit.

Was wondering what became of this car. Very cool revival from the dead, glade to see it will do some racing versus what the majority of us do with e30 M3's keep em, locked away in building.

Project was stalled for some time between competing priorities on my side and lack of availability at my fabricator. Work is starting up again now, with a plan to be racing by the summer.

I literally signed up on this forum just to follow the rest of this build. Glad you are back on recently posting.

I just got a clean 85 E30 and am starting a rally build as well. Couple guys from around my city race in Rally America and do very well. All of them in STi's and like I said are good. So cool to see Rally growing as a sport in the US.

Anyway, I will be expecting new posts and will follow very closely! It is looking great!

My two favorite rides (out of the 5 I have). Can't wait till I get the cage in the E30 =)
