why can't you just inspect after lifting the car? just take off the underbody brace and you can inspect from the bottom.

Thanks so much man. I think I'm going to look into coding this out. I don't know why but it really bothers me that it stops me from driving with the hood up. What if one of the chicken shit sensors fail?

If one of the “chicken shit” sensors fail, your smg gear indicator will begin to flash... but that’s all. If both happen to go out at the same time you’ll be stuck.

Many many years ago a friend had the same issue. We opened the hood, I sat on the fender. He drove ahead and right into the back of the car parked ahead of him. Just be more careful than we were!

Couldn't you just look at the mounts from the bottom of the car? I've never heard or seen anyone diagnose engine mounts by using the method stated in the OP.

It's actually common practice in some very very underground shops.
Open the hood, hold the brake and push the gas a little bit, see how much engine movement there is.

Another way, (doesn't apply to our M3's, as it's RWD), is to put the car in park, without the parking brake and with the hood open rock the car back and forth, again, inspecting the movement of the engine.

It doesn't work with RWD vehicles as there's too much linkage between the engine and rear diff, so even if you have the car in 1st gear or park in an SMG, you'd see very little movement, so a completely ****ed mount would show little movement.
